- Serves as a principal investigator leading teams that conduct basic and applied research to develop medical solutions for chemical, biochemical, and other acute non-kinetic battlefield injuries.
- Utilizing in vivo models, performs research endeavors from concept to definitive pre-clinical studies
- Identifies knowledge gaps in animal model development and/or refinement.
- Develops medical countermeasures including therapeutics and/or devices, and knowledge products and methodologies that advance medical treatments.
- Oversees all facets and phases of the research work: planning and conducting experiments; developing new or utilizing available model systems; gathering, analyzing and interpreting data; making recommendations for future related work.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
- This position requires pre-employment financial disclosure and annually thereafter in accordance with DoD Directive 5500-7-R.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Defense Health Agency Drug Free Workplace Programs.
- Position requires certification in the Controlled Substance Personnel Reliability Program (CS-PRP), IAW AR 190-13.
- Position requires certification in the Chemical Personnel Reliability Program (CPRP), IAW AR 50-6.
- Position requires the ability to wear a respirator and appropriate PPE, IAW AR 385-10 and DA PAM 385-61.
- This is a Defense Acquisition Workforce (AWF) position. The employee must meet the DoDI 5000.66 requirements Foundational Career Level Certification within 36 months as of entrance on duty.
About the Position: As the Department of Defense's lead laboratory for the development of medical countermeasures against chemical, biochemical, and other acute non-kinetic battlefield injuries, the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense (USAMRICD) is increasingly called upon to provide expertise and consultative services related to medical chemical defense research and to the medical management of chemical casualties. Basic Requirement for Research Biologist (0401 Series):
Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological, medical, veterinary, or physical science, or in pharmacy that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry and physiology and 12 semester hours in pharmacology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
ORCombination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Basic Requirement for Research Pharmacologist (0405 Series):
Degree: Bachelors degree (or higher degree) in biological, medical, veterinary, or physical science, or in pharmacy that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry and physiology and 12 semester hours in pharmacology.
Basic Requirement for Research Physiologist (0413 Series):
Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
Basic Requirement for Research Toxicologist (0415 Series):
Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in toxicology; or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
Basic Requirement for Research Chemist (1320 Series):
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work equivalent to a major in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Conducting basic or applied research projects using in vivo models to achieve milestones and produce deliverables; (2) Preparing or assisting in the preparation of research proposals for submission to funding opportunities; AND (3) Developing or assisting in the development of research plans and protocols to execute research projects.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.About the company
