      LRWRA Student Internship Program:

      GOALS:
      1. Creating opportunities for those enrolled in educational programs specific to the Wastewater industry to gain hands on learning through internship.
      2. Create opportunities for LRWRA to assist in the development of future Wastewater industry professionals.
      3. Create awareness for students about LRWRA and the professional opportunities available in the Wastewater industry.
      4. Expand LRWRA’s marketing and education opportunities through partnerships with the local community and professional organizations.

      TIMEFRAME: 10 Weeks/ Up to 35 hours a week (max).

      BENEFIT ELIGIBLE: Intern positions are not eligible for LRWRA employee benefits, including APERS.

      EMPLOYEE STATUS: Interns are employees of a LRWRA community partner staffing agency.



      Summary: Internship is expected to be a 10-week experience that allows students to apply their classroom engineering knowledge to industry problems. The internship will be divided into blocks that enable the student to learn about multiple departments at a time. By the end of the internship, the student should have a broad understanding of engineering objectives and practices at LRWRA. Our framework has 9 weeks of programming and a flex week to account for initial onboarding and post internship debriefing.

      Block 1 (3 weeks): Plan Review, FOG & Surveying
      • Plan Review
        1. Review the standard specifications and go over best practices for reviewing construction drawings. Allow student to complete pre-reviews before submitting. Student should have a healthy understanding of requirements for a main vs a service line.
        2. Perform inspections and acceptance testing of new sewer infrastructure with LRWRA personnel.
      • FOG
        1. Review standard specifications for Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) infrastructure and management of FOG Program.
        2. Perform visual inspections of grease interceptors and investigate complaints with LRWRA personnel.
      • Surveying
        1. Work with LRWRA survey crews to gather field information to prepare construction drawings and as-built drawings.
        2. Work with CAD personnel to develop construction drawings and as-built drawings.
      Block 2 (3 weeks): Capital Projects
      • Capital Project Management
        1. Allow student to review project management techniques and learn about different types of delivery methods for construction projects. (Ex: CMAR vs design-bid process).
        2. Attend bid openings, pre-construction meetings, monthly progress meetings, etc.
      • Maintenance
        1. Perform site visits where LRWRA crews are constructing improvements and maintaining the sewer system.
        2. Perform site visits where LRWRA CCTV maintenance crews are performing internal inspections of sewer lines.
      Block 3 (3 weeks): Treatment Plant
      • Plant Operations
        1. Work at wastewater treatment facilities to become familiar with daily activities of the plant and gain a basic understanding of the treatment process.
      • Lab Review
        1. Work with LRWRA lab personnel to become familiar with how we obtain and test samples to meet NPDES permit requirements.
      ELIGIBILITY: Must be actively enrolled (Part-time or Full-time Enrollment basis) in a college or vocational technical program. Field of study must be related to areas of business within Little Rock Water Reclamation Authority. Such fields would include Engineering, Accounting/Finance, Computer Science/IS, Lab, Electrician, Communications, HR.

      EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: None.

      EDUCATION REQUIRED: High School Diploma/GED and Junior Status – Collegiate Degree Program/Vocational Tech Program. Minimum GPA 2.5 Cumulative.
