The Intern is utilized in ARUP's Research and Innovation (R&I) department. ARUP's culture is one of caring for both the patient and its employees.
About the Supervisor :
Erik Kish-Trier is the Scientific Manager of the Research and Innovation (R&I) department. R&I is tasked with identifying emerging biomarkers and technology that will inform clinical laboratories in the 3-to-5-year timeline. Emphasis is placed on forging strategic partnerships with pharma and IVD developers external to ARUP Laboratories.
Internship Description :
This internship will support a digital pathology project within R&I. The intern will be trained to check out clinical pathology slides, operate a state-of-the-art slide scanner, and QC resultant images. The slides being scanned are bone marrow aspirates and will be used to build a training dataset for machine learning. Exposure will be made to the clinical laboratory usage of machine learning algorithms.

Knowledge, Skills & Techniques Learned from Internship:
This internship will feature opportunities to learn about digital pathology and the clinical reference laboratory environment.
Measurement of New Skills:
The intern will meet biweekly with Erik Kish-Trier to review performance. A 15-minute presentation to the department will be made to summarize the project and the current state of machine learning in the clinical laboratory at the completion of the internship.

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
Communicate: Frequently and effectively communicate with others.
PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
