      Be a part of a collaborative team that works to create safer and efficient shared roadways. Hennepin County Transportation Operations Traffic division is seeking two students as traffic signal data analyst intern for Traffic Management Center (TMC). This position will support data collection, process and analysis related to traffic signal operations and advanced traffic management system.

      Location and hours:
      These positions are hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Hennepin County Public Works Facility, 1600 Prairie Drive in Medina, MN and remote as job duties require. There is no public transportation to this facility. Work hours are 20 hours per week with the opportunity to work 40 hours when school is not in session. This internship is intended to start February 2026 and last up to one year in duration with the potential to extend. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., and may need to be available to work outside the core work hours.

      While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

      In these positions, you will:
      • Perform traffic data collection, process, and analysis.
      • Perform traffic detection accuracy validation.
      • Monitor real-time traffic conditions through traffic cameras.
      • Observe operation of traffic signal detection and controller systems.
      • Assist in the maintenance of coordinated signal timing operations.
      • Assist in organizing documents related to the operation of traffic signals.
      • Create sketches of intersections and collect measurements of turn lanes.
      • Support IT to help resolve communication network issues.
      • Complete miscellaneous tasks as assigned by an engineer.

      Need to have:
      • One of the following:
        • Current enrollment for the 2025-2026 academic school year in an associate or bachelor’s degree program with course work in civil engineering or related fields.
        • Recent graduate (within 6 months) in an associate or bachelor’s degree program with course work in civil engineering or related fields.
      • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver’s permit .
      • Access to reliable transportation.
      • Ability to walk on uneven terrain; bend and stoop, work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
      • Access to reliable internet and hybrid office space.
      Nice to have:
      • Experience with:
        • Data processing and analysis
        • Troubleshooting basic computer issues.
        • Python or R programming language.
        • Microsoft Suite or google equivalent products.
        • ArcGIS.
        • Synchro/SimTraffic.
        • Video editing or video recording software
      • Completed college courses requiring mathematical and/or geometric calculations to support engineering-related projects.
      • Knowledge of:
        • Math functions such as arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
        • Construction equipment, materials, and methods.
        • Fundamental statistics.
      • Ability to communicate with staff at all levels of the organization, using all types of communication method.
