      APA Books publishes premier resources in psychology from the American Psychological Association for students, instructors, researchers, clinicians, and policy makers. All resources are peer reviewed and set a standard for the finest scholarship on psychological research and practice in the social and behavioral sciences. This expansive collection of professional and scholarly books charts our evolving knowledge of all major branches of psychology.

      Responsibilities and expectations of the intern

      1. Reviewing unsolicited manuscript submissions to APA Books, providing editorial commentary and determining fit with APA book list and APA goals, and declining proposals that don't meet publication criteria.

      2. Identifying appropriate peer reviewers for proposals and draft manuscripts, managing review process, and synthesizing reviewer feedback for the author.

      3. Conducting competitive and comparative research for books APA is considering signing and for those in development.

      4. Formatting, inventorying, and assessing new and revised manuscripts.

      5. Assessing permissions and other administrative items, and communicating with authors about them.

      6. Drafting marketing copy and key words.

      7. Helping compile internal Acquisitions Proposals and related material for official approval within APA.

      8. Entering data into internal systems.

      9. Assisting with market research projects for APA Books to inform our product development efforts.

      10. Compiling data for and submitting Cataloging In Publication applications to the Library of Congress.

      11. Fielding and fulfilling complimentary copy and accessibility requests for APA titles.

      12. Coding manuscripts for typesetting and working closely with the typesetter to fulfill conversion requests.

      13. Assisting with proof review.

      14. Working independently, but under careful direction of the Directors of Editorial Acquisitions, Development, and Production.

      Outcomes/goals for the internship

      Develops a working understanding of APA Books audiences, market research and publishing processes and learns to analyze potential book acquisitions and fit with list, as well as core duties within Book Development and Book Production.

      Job Location - Remote: APA internships may be considered for remote work eligibility as defined in APA’s Flexible Work Policy and are subject to approval. Remote work interns may not work from the following states or U.S. territories: Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Guam, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, U.S. Virgin Islands, Washington, Wyoming.
