      Qualifications:

      Associates degree related to interpreting or in the field of deaf education preferred

      Passed the BEI Test of English Proficiency preferred

      Ability to establish and maintain conversations using sign language

      Ability to maintain effective working relationships

      Ability to maintain confidentiality

      Ability to work with children with disabilities

      Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

      Minimum clerical skills

      Knowledge of working with students

      Willingness to participate in ongoing training in the area of interpreting to deaf and hard of hearing students

      MUST RECEIVE FULL BEI CERTIFICATION AFTER THREE YEARS OF EMPLOYMENT

      Primary Purpose:

      Provide assistance for a deaf and hard of hearing student and other students with sensory impairments as needed.

      Major Duties and Responsibilities:

      1. Adhere to federal, state and local policies and procedures related to deaf education
      2. Participate in planned in services and professional growth activities relating to interpreting.
      3. Participate with the educational team in carrying out the instructional program for assigned students.
      4. Provide in class support/signed or oral communication support according to the specifications of the student’s IEP. Assist in preparation, use and maintenance of instructional materials, equipment and technology.
      5. Assist with teacher-planned activities, exercises and drills.
      6. Attend team and professional meetings as required.
      7. Become proficient in student’s individual communication methods and strategies.
      8. Assist in providing information regarding deaf people and the role of an educational interpreter. Interact in a professional manner with administrators, teachers, staff, students, visitors or other individuals and participate as an effective team member.
      9. Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher, principal, or Coordinator for Deaf Education, Vision Service and AT or as determined by specific area of assignment.
      10. Regular and reliable attendance, as well as being flexible to attend needs at other campuses as needed.
      11. Seek out and participate in a minimum of six hours per semester in professional development with the goal of passing the BEI performance interpreter test.
      12. Attempt the receptive and expressive interpreter certification test at least once within the two-year time frame, and results must be provided to the coordinator within 30 days of receipt of testing results.

      Equipment Used:

      Personal computer, copier, audiovisual equipment, CCCT and other assistive devices.

      Working Conditions:

      Maintain emotional control under stress. Moderate standing, stooping, kneeling, pushing, and pulling; regular heavy lifting of students. Biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
