PUBLIC DEFENDER’S OFFICE
The Champaign County Public Defender’s Office is seeking team-oriented applicants for the position of criminal defense investigator.
An investigator for the Public Defender’s Office responds to requests from attorneys to assist them in the defense of their clients. An investigator's assignment typically consists of discovery review, analysis of criminal cases, reviewing charging documents, police videos, photographs and conducting scene visits. The investigator will also locate and interview witnesses and serve subpoenas.
Knowledge of investigative procedures, court and legal proceedings, interviewing, and the ability to obtain information from various sources, both public and private, is preferred.
Applicants must have the ability to effectively and respectfully communicate, collaborate and connect with people with various backgrounds, identities and experiences. Applicants must be able to work independently, produce high quality written reports, and testify in court as needed.
Investigative experience in criminal defense or prior police experience is preferred. Graduate of Police Training Institute and/or Bachelor's degree is desirable. Applicant must possess a valid driver’s license.

Champaign County offers a competitive benefits package, including paid time off, health insurance, life insurance, and employer contributions to a defined-benefit retirement plan. The salary range for this position is $55,000-$70,000 depending on experience.
