Job Description

- Performs maintenance inspections and make repairs found during inspections.
- Inspect, diagnose, and make repairs of mechanical defects on transit buses and related mechanical equipment.
- Inspect and maintain the vehicle air and brake system. Performs brake relines on both drum and disc brake systems.
- Performs diagnosis and repair of the engine, transmission, differential, suspension, HVAC, cooling, and fuel systems.
- Performs detailed electrical diagnosis and repairs.
- Maintains accurate records for repairs made and time worked.
- Performs road tests of transit buses to ensure reliability and accuracy of repairs made.
- Operates a variety of air and pneumatic powered tools.
- On occasions assists other mechanics as needed.
- Maintains clean work area and tools.
- The ability to obtain a valid Class B California Driver License with P endorsement.
- Good DMV record in accordance with agency standards.
- Possession of necessary tools to perform above duties.
- Possession of approved steel-toed safety shoes for wear on the job.
- Theory, operation, and repair of internal combustion engines, automatic transmissions, air brake systems, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems, coolant systems, air and hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and related equipment.
- Tools, precision instruments, computer based diagnostic software, equipment, and procedures used in the repair and maintenance of heavy-duty vehicles.
- Zero emissions technology is highly desirable. i.e., hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric technologies.
- Operate equipment used in repairing or servicing heavy/light duty vehicles.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of complex mechanical problems on CNG, hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric powered transit buses.
- Work various shifts at various agency locations.
- Read, write, and understand English written instructions and information.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Read, interpret, and use parts and technical service manuals.
- Keep accurate records on repairs made and labor time.
- Utilize asset management system.
- Demonstrate safe work practices.
- Learn new technology.

Overview:
Under supervision, perform skilled-diagnoses and mechanical repairs on CNG, hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric transit buses.
The starting pay rate for this position is $32.26 an hour. Pay rate increases incrementally according to the union contract. Current top wage is $41.31 after 36 months.
Employees that work swing and graveyard shifts are eligible for a shift differential of 3% or 5% of their base pay, respectively. $3 more per hour can be obtained for completion and maintaining the H Series and L2 ASE certifications, with the potential to earn an extra $1 per hour for bidding into a Master Transit Bus Technician slot for a total of up to an extra $4 an hour on top of the base pay.
