      Job summary

      The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit at St George's Hospital offers a broad spectrum of experience in OMFS. This includes; Dentoalveolar Surgery, Oral Medicine, Orthognathic Surgery, Trauma Surgery and Head and Neck Oncology.

      Main duties of the job

      The successful applicant will be working as part of the OMFS Team and their duties will include: Outpatient clinics, A&E, Inpatient admissions, Operating Theatre, Facial Deformity, Orthognathic Surgery, Head and Neck Oncology, Trauma together with an on-call commitment.

      The successful applicant will also be expected to partake in audit and research projects and maintain continued professional development.

      About us

      The Maxillofacial Department of St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust consists of seven consultant Maxillofacial Surgeons. All inpatient work is carried out at St George's Hospital where there is an expanding head and neck unit. Outpatient services and Day-Case facilities are also provided at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

      The inpatient facilities at St George's consist of a 22 bed adult ward shared with ENT. There is also a separate Day Care Unit. Outpatients clinics are held daily and there are operating sessions each day. Head and neck oncology patients are managed within a multidisciplinary team includingmaxillofacial surgery, ENT, plastic surgery, clinical oncology and allied health care professionals. The Maxillofacial head and neck consultants are Mr Jayaram, Mr G Smith and Mr K Andi.

      Job description

      Job responsibilities

      The post holder will need to demonstrate their ability to work at ST1/2 level to cover both the departments outpatient and inpatient services.

      This is mainly on St Georges site but under exceptional circumstances you may be required to work at one of our peripheral hospitals.

      Outpatient work consists of the management of patients in the general outpatient clinics with responsibility compatible with the ST1/2 equivalent experience and providing the opportunity to see new patients as well as follow up patents.

      The inpatients work consists of the general management of pre-operative and post-operative patients for all Maxillofacial emergencies and planned operations. The ST1/2 equivalent will be responsible for the arrangement of the essential pre-operative investigations and treatment and carrying out the various administrative duties in preparation for the theatre sessions. You would also be required to communicate with general practitioners on the progress and treatment of patients who have been admitted. The majority of patients are clerked in the outpatients with thehelp of a nurse practitioner.
