Main duties of the job
The post holder will work with the consultants in Sexual Health and will play an active role in all aspects of work within the service.
The ability to work within a multidisciplinary team is essential. Applicants must be both flexible in their approach and be ready to meet the challenges presented by the evolving health service changes in South Yorkshire
The team has delivered an integrated Genito Urinary Medicine and Contraception Sexual Health Service since the 1st April 2014 and is part of the Family Health Directorate. The Directorate has an inclusive culture and the post holder will work as part of a collaborative team with peer support from Consultant colleagues being readily available.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in all aspects of work including undertaking clinics in order to achieve the three key public health outcomes; reducing HIV late diagnosis, improving Chlamydia detection rates and reducing teenage pregnancy.
This post holder will provide sexually transmitted infection care and contraception in Rotherham.

Job responsibilities
The team has delivers integrated Contraception and Sexual Health Services. The Directorate has an inclusive culture and the post holder will work as part of a collaborative team with peer support from Consultant colleagues being readily available.
The Directorate currently provides this post with dedicated secretarial support and additional service administrative support within an adequately equipped office.
Cover arrangements for leave periods are in place and are provided through local agreement with Consultant Colleagues working in the integrated Service.
There are 2.1 WTE Consultant posts at Rotherham and the post holder will, together with consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of a clinical sexual health service.
Patients requiring admission are either admitted under the care of general physicians at Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust (with appropriate input from the consultants regarding clinical management) or (for more complex HIV cases) they are admitted to Wards E1 and E2 at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital under the care of the Sheffield HIV Service. There is no on-call commitment at Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust.
The Post
The post holder would be expected to undertake clinics in order to achieve the three key public health outcomes; reducing HIV late diagnosis, improving Chlamydia detection rates and reducing teenage pregnancy.
This post holder will provide sexually transmitted infection care and contraception in Rotherham.
The post holder will be expected to work in partnership with all other members of the multidisciplinary team to deliver clinically effective, safe, high quality Sexual Health Services to the population served.
All appointees are required to participate in all departmental activities, including audit and administrative responsibilities.
1. Clinical
The Department provides high quality management of sexually transmitted infections including HIV and promotion of sexual health for the population of 252,000 in Rotherham. It has strong links with Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Colposcopy, Dermatology and Primary Care to deliver comprehensive and effective sexual health care.
The post holder will be expected to participate in the delivery of clinics that run on an appointment system and triage to prioritise walk in or urgent cases. The clinics will involve both routine STI and contraception clinics at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust (TRFT).
The post holder will be expected to participate in the delivery of sexual health clinics in outreach locations.
2. Teaching and Education
The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust is committed to teaching and education, facilitating a wide variety of training opportunities to various staff groups, including medical students, nurse students, qualified nurses, junior doctors and other allied health care professionals.
The Trust has a commitment to maintaining requirements outlined in the national policy relating to the New Deal on Junior Doctors Hours European Working Time Directives. It is a responsibility of all medical staff with others to ensure their juniors keep within hours/intensity limitations, have protected teaching time etc. The Trust is currently working towards gaining accreditation status for successfully addressing New Deal issues. It is expected that medical staff work within the Trust in the initiative to establish and maintain accreditation.
The department trains VTS GP trainee doctors as part of a rotation with Dermatology.
Active learning is strongly encouraged, along with opportunities to research and present on topical issues of interest to the specialty.
The post holder will have an active role in participating in Grand Rounds.
The department regularly accommodates undergraduate students and the post holder will support this activity.
The service has excellent established links with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH). Participation in research and service development will be encouraged from the post holder along with Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching and training in Rotherham.
3. Research, Audit and Development
The Trust has an exceptional Research and Development Department and has a committed research ethos. There are strong links with the Universities of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. Research is encouraged within the department and trainees in particular are encouraged and mentored in their audit and research activities.
Participation in clinical audit is a professional and contractual requirement for all doctors within the Trust. The importance of clinical audit is recognised by the Trust and commissioning authorities and protected time for clinical audit is provided with dedicated sessions provided. The post holder is expected to attend and participate in these sessions.
The post holder will be expected to adhere to national and Trust clinical effectiveness guidance using the best information to direct their clinical practice.
Participation in national audit initiatives such as NCEPOD and CESDI is undertaken by the Trust and are regarded as compulsory for Consultant medical staff.
The post holder is encouraged to lead innovative methods of conducting audit and link this to education e.g. journal clubs and integrated care pathways.
Research is performed within the Trust by individual clinicians. Clinical research (subject to Local Ethical Committee approval and usual financial requirements) is encouraged. The post holder will be expected to comply with all principles of research governance.
4. Continuing Professional Development
Continuing Professional Development for the Consultant workforce is strongly supported by the Trust and forms part of the service agreement with the Regional Postgraduate Dean. The Trust actively supports Doctors in the development of their interests other than their clinical commitments including management, audit, research and education. The support extends to the funding of attendance on appropriate training courses in line with Trust policy.
The Trust has Associate Teaching Hospital status and is highly regarded by the large number of student doctors on attachment from Sheffield. The Trust has an enviable reputation as a place to train and this is supported by the annual deanery quality management visits and responses from the GMC trainee survey.
The post holder has the opportunity to access CPD opportunities and will be encouraged and supported to access appropriate CPD.
Weekly grand rounds are held. All doctors are encouraged to attend these and there is usually a healthy turnout and debate.
5. Development of Service
The post holder will be expected to work with the team to assure optimum utilization of all clinical sessions in terms of quality of service provided and productivity.
The post holder will be expected to actively contribute towards the achievement of all targets agreed for the respective Clinical Service Units.
6. Appraisal and Job Planning
The Trusts appraisal and job planning process supports both professional development and reviews performance through a supportive process which feeds into revalidation.
7. Meeting Attendance and Participation
The post holder will be expected to attend and participate in the following meetings:

Clinical Effectiveness bi-monthly
Attendance at additional meetings will be agreed by negotiation with the post holder as and when required.
8. Key Duties and Responsibilities
Provision of a Genitourinary and Contraception Service for outpatients, day cases, in-patients and outreach services in the Community.
Education, training and supervision of medical students.
Administrative duties to ensure the proper functioning of the department.
Provision of cover for colleagues periods of leave.
Participation in medical audit, clinical governance and continuing professional development relating to Genitourinary Medicine and Contraception.
Management and supervision of nursing and other professional staff within the MDT.
9. Productivity
Clinic time is allocated in sessions (blocks of time) and doctors are encouraged to ensure optimum utilization of the sessions allocated to them, in terms of time and productivity.
The post holder will be expected to contribute towards achieving the key performance indicators for the specialty by completing their duties as professionally and efficiently as possible.

In conjunction with the Director of Clinical Services, Consultant & Senior colleagues, to play a full part in developing and implementing new ways of working in line with modernisation principles that are fit for the future.
Working collaboratively with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take responsibility for the best use of Departmental staffing and other resources to ensure the maximum efficiency of the Department.
To observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures, in particular in relation to managing staff, and to follow the Trusts Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions. These policies and procedures have been drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters.
