Job Description:
THE OPPORTUNITY
Scholastic is seeking a Junior Designer to join the Children’s Licensing, Brands & Media Trade Art Department, to design covers and interiors on licensed and original fiction
titles, for preschool through middle grade readers. Experience working on graphic novels is a plus!
RESPONSIBILITIES
Create book mechanicals using the printer’s specifications and provided templates.
Manage the design and production of approximately 10 titles per season, working closely with the Associate Art Director and Editors.
Understand electronic file management and be responsible for archiving projects in a timely manner.
Participation in larger group creative discussions as well as formally presenting designs to explain the concept and art direction to larger teams at Scholastic, including Sales and Marketing. Must be able to collect a range of feedback and communicate that constructively to artists or freelancers or adjust own designs accordingly.
Communicate with the supporting departments on projects, and work with our production and manufacturing teams through the proofing process, up until the finished book.
Attend weekly production meetings, as well as smaller cover meetings with the rest of the design team, to present concepts and artwork.
Research, hire, and work with illustrators, providing art direction and feedback to create compelling artwork for the cover and interior of the book.

Qualifications
HOW YOU CAN FIT (Qualifications)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Thorough knowledge and proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator)
• Have a portfolio featuring a variety of design work or samples
• Ability to conceptualize ideas, sketch, and create creative book designs
• A strong foundation in typography
• Ability to work on and juggle multiple projects at once to meet tight deadlines
• Meticulous attention to detail
Experience and Education: Be a college graduate, art school design degree preferred.
Experience: Minimum 1 year as a Design Assistant in an Art Department, or a completed internship in a publishing art department, preferably in Children’s Books. Previous experience hiring illustrators and working with artist reps is a plus. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Must be able to multi-task and have a go-getter spirit and easy-going attitude! Be proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator).
