      Junior Investment Manager (Portfolio Implementation)

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Portfolio Implementation Desk as a Junior Investment Manager, based in London (hybrid working) on a permanent basis.

      Who we are

Railpen is responsible for the safekeeping and investment of around £34 billion in assets and the administration of several pension schemes, including the Railways Pension Scheme, one of the UK's largest and longest established pension funds.

Our heritage of looking after the pension needs of the rail industry and its employees gives us our name and our unique outlook on how we serve our members. Railpen takes a holistic view, focusing on how we serve members today and how we can positively impact the communities and the world they will retire into.

      The role

Railpen’s Portfolio Implementation Desk is responsible for managing the exposures of all Public Market pooled funds, including a range of gilt funds, LDI funds, DC funds and internally managed underlying sub-portfolios held in the multi-asset Growth fund, e.g. fundamental and quantitative equity portfolios. The Portfolio Implementation Desk acts as the conduit between the Portfolio Managers and the Trading Desk and translates investment ideas into tangible trades, analyses these trades and collaborates with the Trading Desk to come up with suitable trading strategies. In addition to portfolio and trading activity, the Desk is also actively involved in projects with various investment and non-investment teams across the business relating to fund launches, operational changes and investment process changes. The Portfolio Implementation Desk has three core areas of focus: Pre-trade analysis, portfolio management and cash management.

This role will be responsible for the management and co-ordination of portfolio implementation and transitions with a focus on risk, portfolio outcomes and performance.

      The person

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic and highly numerate who can evidence an interest in finance and managing money, as this role will have exposure to the many asset classes that Railpen trade.

The successful candidate will have a technical background with a problem solving and continuous improvement mindset and will be keen to learn new systems and processes. Effective communication skills and an attention to detail are key for this role to allow you to proactively engage and collaborate. Possessing the Investment Management Certificate (IMC) is desirable (but not a prerequisite) as this role will require the successful candidate to obtain the IMC. Some experience in a programming language would also be desirable.

Our values of integrity, community and alignment are the guiding principles that influence our behaviour. They help us make decisions and shape our relationships with others. They’re what we stand for. You will actively demonstrate our values, helping to create a safe environment, to place the needs of the community above oneself and, through a culture of ‘fair challenge’, align to the best interests of our members.
