      Description

      This position is located in Evanston, Illinois.

      The Junior Swim Instructor is an entry-level position that contributes to the creation of a fun, warm, and welcoming environment for a diverse community of swimmers and is responsible for teaching swim lessons and assisting with the operations of the Learn-to-Swim program of the YWCA Evanston/North Shore Flying Fish Aquatics program.


      ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

      Swim Instruction (90%)

      • Teaches swim lessons for all ages and levels.
      • Helps instruct community groups coming in for swim lessons.
      • Assist certified lifeguards with monitoring swimmers as needed.
      • Assist in evaluating swimmers when not teaching.
      • Provides backup instructor coverage and assists other instructors as requested.

      ADDITIONAL DUTIES (10%)

      • Attends staff training and participates in agency committees.
      • Pursues professional development.
      • Understands and adheres to all YWCA Evanston/North Shore employee Handbook.
      • Understands and follows all appropriate Illinois and National safety procedures and policies.
      • Performs other duties as assigned by management, which may include maintenance/cleaning.

      Requirements

      MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

      Experience and/or Training: Experience on a middle school or high school swim team and knowledge of freestyle and backstroke


      Technology/Equipment: Beginner proficiency with swim equipment


      PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

      Experience and/or Training: At least one year of experience providing beginning, intermediate swim instruction.


      Language: Bilingual Spanish


      PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

      Intermittent (less than 15%), Occasional (15-45%), Frequent (50-75%), and Continuous (over 75%).

      • Tolerance of continuous time standing and moving around in warm and cool water, climbing stairs or ladders, reaching with hands and arms, and reaching above the shoulders.
      • Occasionally required to push, pull, lift, and/or move up to 30 pounds.
      • Must be able to move about the facility.
      • Must be able to operate controls for computers and other equipment.

      WORKING ENVIRONMENT

      • Employees are required to work in bathing suits and spend most of their work hours submerged in warm or cool water.
      • Employees are required, when not in the pool, to stand on deck in humid, warm spaces.
      • Employees may be required to share workspace.
