Position Title: K-9 Handler Salary Schedule: CLSJ Department: School Leadership Job Code: Reports To: Executive Director of Safety and Security Work Schedule: Annual/8 hours per day Grade/Level: KET *Kennel pay considerations have been included in the salary range FLSA: Non-Exempt Primary Function: We are seeking a dedicated and experienced School-Based K9 Handler to join our team and assist in maintaining a safe and secure environment within our District. The School-Based K9 Handler will work closely with a specially trained K9 unit to deter and detect prohibited substances, weapons, and other contraband on school premises Working Conditions: Physical Demands: Office environment Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard Constant interruptions Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone Regular Field Work Seeing to read a variety of materials Sitting for extended periods of time Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching Lifting and transport up to 25 pounds over short distances and short periods of time Ability to work indoors and outdoors during all types of weather including hot, cold, rainy, humid, and dry conditions Qualifications: Minimum of a high school diploma or GED (Secondary education preferred) Working knowledge of applicable local, State and Federal laws, guidelines, regulations, etc relating to law enforcement/K9 Proven experience in Law Enforcement, K9 handling, or related field, preferably in an educational or similar setting Strong organizational and communication skills to develop and implement risk management programs effectively P.O.S.T Certification, in good standing, no sanctions and must maintain. K9 Handler experience strongly preferred Ability to provide for canine cohabitation, or reasonable living accommodations, required The Board of Education and the Superintendent may accept alternatives to some of the above requirements. Essential Functions: Conduct regular patrols of school grounds alongside the K9 unit to deter and detect unauthorized substances or items. Train and maintain proficiency with the K9 partner in various detection techniques including narcotics, explosives, and firearms. Collaborate with school administration, security personnel, and law enforcement agencies to address safety concerns and implement security measures. Assist in conducting searches of lockers, classrooms, parking lots, and other areas as needed. Participate in educational programs to raise awareness about the role of the K9 unit in maintaining a safe school environment. Provide support during school events, drills, and emergency situations as directed by school authorities. Ensure the proper care, health, and well-being of the K9 partner at all times. Maintain accurate records of K9 activities, deployments, and training sessions. Stay updated on relevant laws, regulations, and best practices related to K9 handling and school security. Work designated extracurricular events to promote enhanced security at large events Familiarity with K-12 applicable laws, policies, regulations, legal precedence, and other related guidance from local, state, and federal sources to ensure appropriate use of K9 resources. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with students, staff, and external stakeholders. Ability to handle and control large breed dogs in various environments. Sound judgment and decision-making abilities, particularly in high-pressure situations. Physical fitness and agility to perform duties such as walking, standing, and bending for extended periods. Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed. Other duties as assigned by Superintendent, or designee **Note:** This job description outlines the general duties and qualifications expected of a School-Based K9 Handler. Offer of employment may have a minimum service expectation based on qualifying factors to possibly include: length of commitment to the School District based on available resources. The district will provide for basic care of K9- to include but not limited to: food, reasonable housing (home based kennel), boarding fees as needed, medical coverage, and other essential items for health and well-being of the partnership.
