RegularPosition Description
The RAND Corporation, a global leader in public policy research, is seeking a recognized scholar and dynamic leader to fill its newly established Korea Policy Chair. Created with significant support from the Korea Foundation, the Chairholder will undertake research on challenges to Indo-Pacific security and prosperity that are of interest between the Republic of Korea and the United States.
The holder of the Korea Policy Chair will develop and manage a research agenda on Indo-Pacific security and prosperity that is relevant to RAND's priority sponsors; build partnerships with research institutes in Korea to organize symposia, exchange programs, and joint research projects; and mentor Korea studies scholars at RAND. The resources available to support the Chair will significantly, but not entirely, fund the position. To supplement the support provided by the donors, as well as to establish a flourishing program of Korea policy studies at RAND, the Chair will be required to develop a program of externally-funded research at RAND. The expectation is that a significant share of externally funded research will come from projects for sponsors in Korea. As part of the mentoring process, the Chair is expected to advise and support junior scholars in developing such projects. The Chair is a two-year term position which may be renewable depending on the growth of Korea policy studies and sponsorship. The opportunity is open to scholars of Korea’s security policies, politics, international relations and international development. Scholars of public policy research relevant to international relations and development in such areas as economics and technology are also encouraged to apply.
The Chair will have the opportunity to work collaboratively across disciplines with RAND researchers in fields such as law, economics, engineering, education, health care, political science, psychology, sociology, and statistics. This multidisciplinary approach to research and analysis is a hallmark of RAND research.
Qualifications
All research positions at RAND require excellent analytic skills, the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both orally and in writing; the ability to work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team on projects that are designed for policy impact; and a strong commitment to RAND's core values of quality and objectivity. In addition, the Chair is expected to have a strong relevant research record and will be expected to mentor junior analysts at the Pardee RAND Graduate School and will have the opportunity to teach at the School.
Education Requirements
Experience
Applicants with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in an academic or non-academic research setting required. Fluency in the Korean language is preferred. The successful candidate will have proven program management experience. Experience that includes initiating and developing Korea studies programming, fund-raising, and outreach is highly desirable.
Location
Hybrid work arrangement based on residing near a RAND office in Santa Monica, CA; Pittsburgh, PA; Arlington, VA; or Boston, MA is required. (Fully remote is not available for this role. Relocation may be possible.)
Salary Range
Full Researcher: $109,600 - $181,075
Senior Researcher: $145,500 - $251,175
Hiring ranges for Economists, Management Scientists and Physician Researchers are slightly higher than the ranges shown.
Research management roles are term assignments that are performed by experienced researchers. RAND considers a variety of factors when formulating an offer, including but not limited to, the specific role and associated responsibilities; a candidate’s work experience, education/training, skills, expertise; and internal equity. Successful candidates will be offered employment as a Full or Senior researcher in a specific title, as determined by the candidate's education and experience. The salary range includes base pay plus RAND’s sabbatic pay (which provides compensation above base pay when vacation is taken). This position may also be eligible for additional compensation. RAND provides strong benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, paid time-off and more.
