      Overview

      Classification Range: $31.45 - $38.25/hr

      Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $31.45 per hour

      Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

      Licensed to San Diego State University, KPBS Radio, Television & Online serves San Diego and Imperial counties

      with news, information, entertainment and cultural content. The organization presents local and national content that is valued and trusted by the community. KPBS also produces and distributes content about our region that is valued by local, regional,national and international audiences and is worthy of support.

      This position is a part-time, temporary position, and is not expected to exceed six months.

      This position is part of the SAG-AFTRA bargaining unit with KPBS.

      Responsibilities

      The following information is intended to be representative of the work performed by incumbents in this position and is not all-inclusive.       The KPBS Noticias Freelance Web Producer‘s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

      Production (70%)

      • Works closely with the Web Producer team to identify, produce and/or translate engaging news content highlighting Latina/o/x voices, narratives, missing or mis-information to address the community’s information needs
      • Reviews, translates and copy edits reporters' online news stories, in coordination with other News Editors.
      • Cultivate sources, identify important trends in Latina/o/x news, and collect and verify information through a variety of online/offline channels
      • Cover breaking news stories – assigned or enterprise – efficiently and accurately in all mediums on all platforms
      • Create and enhance digital content (including, but not limited to, newsletters, data visualizations, and social media posts) in support of our news coverage
      • Develops and produces special coverage and projects that increase our reach, boost community engagement and support KPBS’s overall mission.
      • Builds online sections and features incorporating research, writing, editing, layout, multimedia and other interactive features.

      Community Engagement (20%)

      • Craft and manage callouts, surveys and other crowdsourcing tools
      • Optimize, produce, and report stories that result from community outreach and engagement
      • Flag and follow up on community-sourced tips
      • Host and moderate conversations on topics of impact with diverse groups online and in-person

      Other Duties as Assigned (10%)

      For example: Participate in station on-air fundraising activities, and make appearances for KPBS community building events and other or related activities or filling in as web producer when needed. Additional duties may be assigned at the discretion of the supervisor.

      Qualifications

      MINIMUM EDUCATION:

      • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent training and work in journalism.

      MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:

      • At least 2 years of progressively responsible or related experience in journalism along with basic news judgment, understanding of journalism ethics and the ability to swiftly and accurately report breaking news on all platforms.

      KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

      • Professional fluency in English and Spanish
      • Ability to translate news content for media organizations
      • Knowledge of journalistic techniques, materials, and equipment used in news production.
      • Knowledge of a full range of production techniques including graphics, television, video editing methods and equipment and/or a basic knowledge of HTML/CSS where relevant for digital-specific news producer positions.
      • Basic computer skills to operate Newsroom Computer System such as Inception, and video editing software system such as Adobe Premiere.
      • Ability to consistently write with AP/Broadcast style, structure and grammar.
      • Ability to write on at least one platform (audio, video, or web) and the willingness to develop an ability on one other or both platforms.
      • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts, and to respond to breaking news as needed.
      • Writing and editing skills, including a foundation in English grammar.
      • Ability to perform moderately complex technical work and produce daily news content.
      • Ability to interact/communicate effectively with co-workers and audience members on all relevant news mediums and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
      • Ability to display organization and manage time efficiently, meet deadlines, display detail orientation, and possess good judgment.
      • Ability to demonstrate a high level of cross-cultural sensitivity and strong interpersonal skills.
      • Ability to understand and follow posted work rules and procedures.
      • Ability to exercise limited judgment and discretion.
      • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff members and students.

      PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

      • Experience using Grove (CMS)
      • Experience producing multimedia stories and/or knowledge of video and photo editing platforms
      • Experience working in a newsroom
      • Reliable transportation, valid driver's license and proof of insurance required

      Additional Applicant Information:

      • This position will be filled on an as-needed basis
      • Work schedules will vary and on an as-needed basis; there may be shifts available throughout the day, depending on the need
      • Candidates must reside in California, or be willing to relocate, and live within a commutable distance to the SDSU campus at the time of hire.
