Job summary

This is a fantastic opportunity to join the Medical Physics department at University Hospitals Birmingham as an apprentice, to study and gain an undergraduate degree.

You will carry out work-based learning in the department, under supervision, whilst also

attending academic sessions at University and earning a salary.

On successful completion of this apprenticeship, you will gain a BSc (Hons) in Healthcare Science (Medical Physics Technology), with recognition of your specialist pathway in either Radiation Physics or Nuclear Medicine. This degree programme is endorsed by the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), and accredited by the National School of Healthcare Science (NSHCS) as part of Health Education England.

This opportunity will enable you to gain the necessary education, experience, skills and knowledge to work as a Medical Physics Technologist (Healthcare Science Practitioner) in Radiation Physics or Nuclear Medicine.

At the end of the programme you will be eligible to apply for Clinical Technologist (Healthcare Science Practitioner) roles in Radiation Physics or Nuclear Medicine.

You will also be required to attend University for seminars, laboratory and practical sessions, plus tutorials and assessments.

University modules include:

Scientific basis of medical physics,

Pathophysiology of disease, and anatomy and physiology.

Advanced and in-depth focus on medical physics

Main duties of the job

To participate in the following activities, under appropriate supervision, thereby gaining education and skills required to be a Clinical Technologist (Healthcare Science Practitioner)

*To study and gain formal qualification in BSc Healthcare Science Medical Physics through the Healthcare Science Apprenticeship Programme. They will carry out work based learning in the department under the supervision of a workplace supervisor and attend academic sessions as prescribed by the academic institute.

Clinical Technologists/ Healthcare Science Practitioner:

*Conduct safe working practices applying risk management and health and safety principles

*Work safely specifically regarding radioactive, biological and chemical hazards in accordance with current legislation

*Perform equipment management procedures

*Operate quality management systems

*Carry out audit to continuously improve patient care and service needs.

*Use computer systems and software

*Operate medical equipment, performing calibration, equipment quality assurance and quality control

*Perform quality control procedures, review and interpret results

*Maintain appropriate records

*Communicate effectively with stakeholders

*Undertake all mandatory training

*Operate in accordance with Good Scientific Practice

*Work as "Operator" under the requirements of the IR(ME)R regulations

*Perform assessments, interventions and equipment handovers

*Perform measurements, checks and tests required to prescribe or design technology solutions
