Occupational Summary
The Department of Integrative Immunobiology/Miao laboratory at Duke University are seeking an entry-level Lab Technician (no degree required). After a training period, the time of shifts will be flexible, with 40 hours worked per week (Monday-Friday).
The Miao laboratory uses both in vivo and in vitro models to study host-pathogen interactions, with a particular focus on innate immunity and regulated cell death. We are seeking a dedicated and responsible individual to perform mouse husbandry in our ASBL-1 mouse colony. The perfect candidate has excellent communication skills, is detail-oriented, and can adhere to the lab’s established processes/protocols with distinction. No prior mouse experience is necessary. All skills performed will be trained on the job. Must be willing to communicate via Microsoft Teams (on personal phone and university computers), Microsoft Outlook (email and calendars). Experience with Microsoft Excel is preferred.
The Department of Integrative Immunobiology will also utilize this position to support biohazard waste management and sterilization of lab dishes/glassware for multiple labs in the department.

Work Performed
Utilize dishwasher and autoclaves to perform sterilization of laboratory dishes. Reserve time on Outlook reservation calendar. Manage biohazard waste for multiple labs in the department.
Work under the supervision of the lab manager to maintain and organize a colony of ~2000 mice in animal biosafety level-1 (ABSL-1) conditions. Perform checks for new mouse pups that are born and move young mice to new cages separate from the mothers when they are ready to be weaned, working in a team with undergraduate workers in the lab. Learn how to manage the retirement of breeders and to manage the mouse colony size. Maintain Excel spreadsheet to accurately reflect critical information such as cage location, number of mice in each cage, litter birthdates, and more. Perform mouse handling procedures such as ear punch, euthanasia. Monitor veterinary cases and keep health records. Communicate with lab manager, PI, and DLAR staff. Communicate with researchers in the lab to understand the current need for each mouse strain for experiments.
Other tasks in the main lab may occasionally be required. For example: assist lab manager with maintenance and disposal of chemical and biohazardous materials; make media, buffer, and antibiotic solutions; procure and receive goods, store at proper temperature.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training:
Completion of high school education.
Experience:
Work requires experience in a laboratory research environment or in animal (mouse) husbandry.
Skills:
Applicants must have a basic understanding of mathematics (at least algebra) and a basic understanding of how to use computers and Microsoft Excel or other similar spreadsheet programs. On the job training will be provided.
An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience and/or skills is acceptable if applicants do not meet the exact requirements in any one category.
