      Job Summary

      The Laboratory Manager will direct daily operations of the Center for Environmental Stable Isotope Analysis (CESIA) research laboratory facilities. The incumbent will supervise and instruct users in the operation of equipment used to conduct research, and provide analytical services for external users. The Laboratory Manager will research and implement upgrades to laboratory systems consistent with contemporary research standards and maintain applicable systems and document maintenance of the systems. The Laboratory Manager will assist in developing new analytical methods and applications and analyzing specific sample sets as needed. The Laboratory Manager will provide technical guidance and research to support the facilities’ core faculty, students and other researchers and will serve as laboratory safety officer and liaison to Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S).

      Minimum Qualifications

      • Masters’ Degree in related field with background in Chemistry, Geology, Environmental Sciences, Biology or a related field
      • 3 years’ experience in higher education instruction or research with three or more of the following: operation and maintenance of general laboratory equipment, data acquisition systems, operation of computer controlled mechanical systems.
      • Demonstrated experience in the operation of geochemical analytical equipment such as, but not limited to, Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometers, Elemental Analyzers, other Gas Source Mass Spectrometers

        A relevant combination of education, directly related experience and training may be substituted for a degree.

      Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

      • Knowledge and skill in a wide variety of technical and scientific applications
      • Ability to assess and evaluate the quality of geochemical analytical results
      • Ability to interact with service personnel
      • Knowledge and skills at computer networking, software and hardware installation and operation
      • Demonstrated ability to coordinate purchasing, lab supplies, and equipment repairs and service
      • Ability to supervise student projects
      • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
      • Ability to anticipate and solve problems
      • Ability to work independently

      Salary Range/Rate

      Expected hiring range: $75,000-$80,000

      Pay transparency disclosure: The selected candidate’s salary will be determined based on factors that include the available budget, internal equity, and the final candidate’s qualifications, experience, education and other job-related credentials. This hiring range is provided as Rensselaer’s good faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting.
