      The Texas A&M University Cyc lo tron Institute, a Department of Energy University Facility, is jointly supported by DOE and the State of Texas and is a major technical and educational resource for the state and the nation. At the Institute, we focus on conducting basic research, educating students in accelerator-based science and technology, and providing technical capabilities for a wide variety of applications in space science, materials science, analytical procedures and nuclear medicine.       What We Want

      The Lab Technician will be responsible for maintaining the laboratory and the equipment required to produce, purify and provide astatine-211. The Lab Technician will also keep all SOPs up to date and assure that each production run is done consistent with those SOPs. The selected candidate will maintain and operate the following equipment: ADA , HPGe, HPLC, TLC, ICP-OES, radiation survey meters. Additional duties will include arranging for dissemination, including shipping, and maintain documentation.       What You Need to Know

      Hourly Rate: $15.85 an hour

      Special Note: Due to this position’s salary having all or a portion of it being funded by grants or contracts, the continuing salary and overall employment is contingent upon availability of these funds in the future.

      Schedule: The selected candidate must be able to work early mornings and evenings as needed.

      Required Education and Experience:

      • Associate degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience

      • One year of related lab work experience

      Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

      • Knowledge of lab room preparation and lab techniques and safety

      • Ability to lift moderately heavy equipment

      • Ability to duck, climb, and lift

      Preferred Education and Experience:

      • Bachelor's degree in chemistry

      • Experience with purification of radioactive isotopes

      • Previous experience with writing up SOP-type documents desired

      • Previous experience with radiation detectors or instrumentation

      Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

      • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with proper lab safety including working with radioactive materials

      • Computing/programming skills including LabVIEW; hands-on skills

      • Moderate understanding of nuclear physics

      • Lab safety skills

      • Strong organization skills

      • Problem-solving skills

      • Basic understanding of electrical circuits

      • Willingness to take directions and have effective communication skills (oral and written)

      Responsibilities:

      • Maintains detectors and other equipment: Maintains instrumentation (ADA, HPGe, ICP-OES, HPLC, TLC). Completes the calibration of Dose Calibrator, HPGe calibration & maintenance, target management, and ADA maintenance. Monitors equipment. Performs RadioTLC and RadioHPLC upkeep.-Improves and develops new experiments to be implemented. Assists undergraduate and graduate students with their research projects. Maintains inventory and orders parts and supplies as needed. Maintains laboratories according to Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) specifications. Provides logistical support with computers in the laboratory. Performs laboratory and prep room cleanup.

      • Assures that all SOPs are accurate and up to date (develop new ones as needed): Keeps track of how much At-211 is in the lab. Develops QA/QC for At-211. Develop protocols for external scientists to execute At-211 experiments at TAMU.

      • Oversees all aspects of production: Arranges shipping for NIDC customers and TAMU collaborators. Maintains documentation. Escorts visitors in 001CE for our Center. Teaches and promotes lab safety. Interfaces with EHS. Interfaces with NIDC & EHS

      • Becomes an external ambassador for the At-211 program: Provides tours for people interested in the At-211 program. Speaks at meetings about the At-211 program. Acts as the local liaison for external collaborators in the At-211 program and performs other duties as assigned.
