      Job Summary

      The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching group ice skating classes for participants ages 3 to adult. Groups range in size from 4-10 participants with the majority of the participants working on basic skating skills.

      Evening and weekend hours are available at various arenas in Mississauga.

      Duties and Responsibilities

      Under the direction of the Supervisor of Community Programs and the Lead Coach, the successful candidate will be responsible for teaching basic to advanced skills through group lessons to participants ranging in age from 3 years to adult.

      • Group lesson sizes vary from 4 to 10 participants with classes varying in length from 30 to 50 minutes.
      • Ensure the continuing safety of all participants during lessons.
      • Prepare and deliver lessons that are inclusive and meet the needs of all participants in the group.
      • Inspect participants skating equipment for proper fit and condition on an ongoing basis.
      • Inspect equipment used in the program on an ongoing basis to ensure that it is safe.
      • Prepare weekly lesson plans for each group and be prepared to review lesson plans with the Lead Coach or Supervisor.
      • Incorporate and model the HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development in program delivery where appropriate.
      • Provide quality customer service to participants, parents and volunteers.
      • Ensure that all participants are properly registered and recorded on the class list weekly.
      • Evaluate students progress and complete progress cards for each student in a testable program.
      • Perform other related duties as assigned.

      Skills and Qualifications

      • Minimum 15 years of age.
      • Figure Skating, Hockey, Recreational skating lessons or Ringette experience.
      • Have the knowledge to teach and ability to perform the skills in the City of Mississauga Skating Program.
      • Must hold a valid Emergency or Standard First Aid certificate with CPR B or C (Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross Society, St. John's Ambulance or the Canadian Ski Patrol) certification (must be recognized by WSIB). The award must be current during the employment period and is at the employees expense.
      • Must hold a valid HIGH FIVE ® Principles of Healthy Child Development certification and is at the employees expense.
      • Strong leadership, organizational and planning skills.
      • Strong skills in verbal and written communication.
      • Ability to work as part of a team.
      • Previous customer service experience is an asset.
      • Must be prepared to work with children and adults.
      • Must be able to stand/skate for extended periods of time in a cold environment.
      • Required to provide own skates and CSA approved hockey helmet or Wuevo Figure Skating Helmet.
      • A Level 3 - Vulnerable Sector Check will be required of the successful candidate, as a condition of employment, at their own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.
