      A Day in the Life…

      The Learning Strategist reports to the Manager, Student Accessibility Services in the Student Accessibility Services department. This position is responsible for providing learning strategy support, guidance, and academic skill development support to students with disabilities, who are registered with Student Accessibility Services. The Learning Strategist works closely with team members to facilitate the academic growth and development of students.

      As the Learning Strategist, you will:

      • Meet with students, either individually or in small groups, to help them develop strategies for learning that are specific to their disability-related needs, using a strength-based model;
      • Maintain records of appointments, strategies taught, student feedback, student concerns, referrals made, and areas of concern;
      • Analyse student work (essays, tests, assignments) to identify patterns of difficulty;
      • Review recommendations in the student's psychoeducational assessment report to assist with planning strategies and support services for students;
      • Use a variety of research methods (library databases, journals, conferences, internet searches, etc.) to determine best practices for meeting the needs of students with learning disabilities in post-secondary settings;
      • Stay up to date with legislation, such as the Ontario with Disabilities Act and the Ontario Human Rights Code;
      • Research applications that can be used on smart phones to assist students with planning, organizational skills, voice recognition, etc.;
      • Collaborate with the Assistive Technologist to evaluate student software use;
      • Provide alternate format service for students, in conjunction with the Assistive Technologist;
      • Provide MCU semi-annual data and reports on services to the Manager, Student Accessibility Services.

      What you need to Succeed…

      • University degree in a relevant field
      • Two (2) - five (5) years of experience working with post-secondary students with learning disabilities;
      • Knowledge of best practices for teaching adults with learning disabilities and for effective learning strategy instruction;
      • Knowledge of current theories of learning disabilities, adult education theory and practice, and pedagogical practices;
      • Ability to develop effective, creative, and innovative learning strategies for students with disabilities impacting learning and academic performance;
      • Knowledge of current legislation pertaining to students with disabilities in a post-secondary setting (Ontario Human Rights Code and Ontarians with Disabilities Act);
      • Excellent interpersonal communication skills in order to elicit important information and develop rapport with students;
      • Ability to liaise with colleagues, faculty, personal counsellors, and service providers at other post-secondary institutions;
      • Creative and innovative problem-solving skills to meet the individual learning needs of students;
      • Ability to find and/or adapt a strategy to meet a student's needs regardless of the severity of disability.

      Preferred or Asset Skills…

      • Ontario Teaching Certificate, registered with the Ontario College of Teachers and with additional qualification coursework in special education;
      • Graduate degree in Education or relevant area of study;
      • Completion of the Learning Strategist Certificate programs.

      Salary and Benefit Information

      • Job Grade (K), Salary Scale $54,348-$73,171 (prorated based on season)*;
      • this is an ongoing seasonal position, 35 hours per week from approximately September until mid-May
      • This position includes prorated comprehensive benefits coverage including tuition waiver.

      *The salary range indicated is representative of all positions evaluated at this level. Actual salary is determined by assessing related skills, experience, internal equity and market competitiveness, subject to available budget.
