      Leave of Absence Specialist applies knowledge of leaves to manage leave of absence (LOA) process for academic employees. Provides consultation, assistance and manages leave cases. Coordinates with campus units such as workers compensation, disability management, benefits, and labor and employee relations on policy and compliance requirements. Partners with leaves lead and advises colleagues on the areas of academic personnel and leaves.

      The role of the Leaves Specialist is dedicated to managing leaves of absences with professionalism and respect for our employees. The Leaves Specialist serves as a member of the shared services model of the integrated HR organization. The position partners closely with UCSF Campus departments to facilitate academic leaves of absences, proactively address and resolve routine and complex leaves of absence by applying policy/contract knowledge, leave laws and experience. The position partners with departments, employees, and HR/Payroll specialty centers to deliver efficient and effective services and ensure compliance with UCSF HR policy/contract and procedures. The position will perform all duties with tact, discretion and in accordance with privacy requirements.

      • Bachelor's degree in related area and minimum of 3 years related experience and / or equivalent experience / training.
      • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a leave of absence administration role, or related experience with high level HR activities.
      • Advanced knowledge of FMLA, or CFRA, or PFL, or PDL, or Workers Comp, or Military Leave, or ERISA, or HIPAA and/or applicable state and federal laws
      • Advanced knowledge of rules and regulations affecting employee benefit programs.
      • Ability to maintain confidentiality and safeguard information.
      • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
      • Ability to communicate effectively and with confidence.
      • Advanced skill and sensitivity in dealing with others.
      • Ability to handle difficult and complicated issues with professionalism and sound judgement.
      • Strong organizational and time management skills.
      • Ability to build relationships, collaborate and problem solve across all levels of the organization.
      • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills.
      • Advanced ability to provide high level of service and adapt to shifting priorities.
      • Knowledge of computer databases and Windows software.
      • Ability to coach and instruct staff.
