      The Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences at Rowan University is seeking to hire a qualified individual as full-time non-tenure-track open rank Lecturer. This 12-month position requires a successful candidate to oversee the operation of an aquaponic farm and greenhouse dedicated to sustainable and innovative agriculture practices. In addition to managing day-to-day operations, the ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in educating and training the next generation of agriculture professionals. This grant funded position requires a combination of leadership, technical expertise, and a passion for sharing knowledge.

      This lecturer position is a hybrid, 12-months full-time, non-tenure track teaching faculty. Successful candidates will have a combination of teaching credits and laboratory technician duties, with an option to teach overload and summer classes for additional compensation. Lecturer positions receive an initial 2-year contract that is renewable, with expectations for continuing reappointment.

      Responsibilities

      • Oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of the aquaponic system(s), including monitoring water quality, fish health, and plant growth.
      • Implement and maintain optimal aquaponic system parameters and climate control measures to ensure optimal growing conditions.
      • Troubleshoot and resolve any issues related to the aquaponic system(s).
      • Conduct other greenhouse activities, including seeding, transplanting, harvesting, and pest control.
      • Develop standard operating procedures and daily checklists for all operating systems.
      • Develop and maintain record-keeping systems to track production metrics and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
      • Establish, document, and enforce quality control standards for plant and fish production.
      • Stay up to date with the latest advancements in indoor farming techniques, emerging technologies, and industry trends, and integrate relevant innovations into facility practices.
      • Manage facility budgets, track expenses, and partner with facilities to negotiate contracts with suppliers and service providers.
      • Recommend and oversee facility upgrades and new construction.
      • Propose and implement innovative solutions to enhance the educational experience e.g. efficiency, sustainability, production.
      • Develop and deliver lectures, workshops, and hands-on training sessions on indoor farming practices e.g. aquaponic and hydroponic farming and greenhouse management
      • Create educational materials, including manuals and presentations, to support the learning experience.
      • Participate in the selection of and supervises subordinate staff including clerical, part-time, and/or student workers.
      • Monitor the work of the students and/or staff, identifying problem areas and making suggestions for improvement.
      • Act as liaison and coordinate activities with other departments across campus and as well as external organizations.
      • Represents the University at conferences, meetings, and seminars, and to the public as required.

      Qualifications

      • Masters degree required in Biology, Agriculture, Plant Science, Horticulture, or related field.
      • Proven experience in aquaponic farming, controlled environment agriculture and greenhouse management.
      • Knowledge of sustainable farming practices and environmental stewardship.
      • Familiarity with relevant regulations and compliance standards.
      • Strong leadership and team management skills.
      • Self-starter with excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
      • Experience in teaching or training in a related field is preferred.
      • Prior teaching and curriculum development experience is advantageous, but not required.
      • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

      The Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences is one of six departments in the College of Science and Mathematics, which is also home to the School of Earth & Environment.
