Open-ended
Full time 35 hours per week
Edinburgh College of Art is seeking an enthusiastic and pro-active individual for the post of Lecturer in Fashion in the School of Design.
The Opportunity:
The post has a focus on research and teaching in Fashion Design, including responsibility for a proportion of the teaching of our Undergraduate Fashion students. The work will involve a broad range of academic functions across teaching, research and citizenship, including the preparation and delivery of lectures, workshops, seminars, tutorials, and the assessment of course assignments.
Although teaching responsibilities may be subject to change on a year-to-year basis depending on Programme needs, you will initially be responsible for the Course Organisation and teaching of our 2nd year level courses, working closely with the Programme Director and a range of academic and technical staff to deliver excellence in learning & teaching.
These courses build upon student’s prior introduction to the fundamentals of fashion design learning in Year 1, introducing them to technical pattern cutting methods, creative design, and socially responsible practices that address equalities, inclusion, identity, representation, ability, and well-being. You will therefore demonstrate an understanding of this important subject in relation to ongoing needs in Fashion Design learning, working with the team to support and embed approaches to decolonizing curriculum content and teaching methods, and with the ability to engage with a range of external industry collaborative partners.
You will be required to deliver a range of established approaches to the teaching of fashion design, whilst integrating new methods and thinking relating to fashion futures, technology, and innovation. The role will also require you to support the Schools ongoing vision to embed sustainable and environmentally considerate design practices at the core of their teaching methodology.
You will be expected to contribute to leadership, management, citizenship and administrative duties across teaching and research activities, commensurate with the role. This post may, pending changing needs, include future scope for roles such as Programme Director or a range of cross college leadership opportunities. Therefore, you will bring dynamic leadership skills, including ambition to develop and enhance teaching quality and overall academic vision for the Programme. There may also be scope to contribute to the development and teaching of, future Postgraduate provision in the area of Fashion and Wearables, in addition to future curriculum development.
You will be expected to be an ambitious and visionary researcher, and we welcome applications relating to practice oriented research that enhances and links to student learning. You will bring a pre-existing track record of excellent research of a high national or international standard, and you will demonstrate current, active research, including clear plans for future research development at the University.
The postholder will be expected to supervise PHD candidates and contribute, where appropriate, to broader cross-disciplinary teaching (at both postgraduate and undergraduate level).
We actively welcome candidates from all backgrounds to join our dynamic and welcoming community of creative academics and students.
