      Job summary

      LED in Emergency Medicine - FY3/CT1 Equivalent

      From August 2024 there is an opportunity to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team order to support and help to provide a comprehensive Emergency medicine service within the Trust.

      The Emergency department is small & friendly & we see in the region of 55,000 new patients per year. This includes adults and children. The medical staffing consists of 8.2 WTE consultants/specialists, 18 middle grade doctors (Specialty doctors and Specialty trainees), and 13 other doctors below specialty level (including 4 F2 posts) and 2 F1 doctors.

      There are also Advanced care practitioners & Emergency Nurse Practitioners within the department. Senior staff are in the department 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with consultant direct support and supervision on each of the 7 days. There is a trauma team for major trauma. "Shop floor" teaching and support is an active component of the daily work of the middle grade and senior staff.

      There is opportunity for audit and other quality improvement activity. There is a weekly teaching programme for junior medical staff and a library of reference books in the department. In addition there is access to extensive medical resources on the hospital intranet and internet.

      Main duties of the job

      • To undertake the initial assessment, diagnosis and management of patients in the Emergency Department (ED
      • To facilitate safe discharge or onward referral of these patients from the ED
      • Liaison with other specialties and agencies including Primary Care within this process
      • Requesting diagnostic tests (such as X-Ray and laboratory investigations) and taking biological samples, manually and through the Trust's computerised system
      • To provide advice and support to other junior staff and nursing staff within the department
      • Act in accordance with the policies of the ED and seek advice and assistance from more senior medical and nursing staff where appropriate
