Job Description

- Support corporate, commercial, regulatory and other legal matters at the WestJet Group;
- Provide pragmatic and timely legal advice to various departments on contractual and other legal issues;
- Partner with WestJet business units and the technical operations and procurement teams to review, vet, draft, negotiate and revise and provide advice on a range of contracts with vendors and suppliers – including contracts and agreements related to aircraft maintenance services and the procurement of aircraft parts and components;
- Represent WestJet in negotiations and discussions and other dealings with counterparties and governmental agencies, as needed;
- Provide in-depth research and analysis of proposed legislation and regulations and provide updates to internal stakeholders;
- Conduct and/or oversee the handling of commercial disputes;
- Instruct and manage external counsel on a variety of files;
- Together with other members of the legal team, conduct and/or oversee the handling of air passenger complaints; and
- Provide legal advice to WestJet and its affiliates generally.
- Must be a lawyer with 3 to 5 years of legal experience in a law firm or in-house counsel position and be a member in good standing of the Alberta Bar (or another provincial bar);
- Broad base of experience in corporate/commercial law required;
- Broad base of regulatory law is an asset;
- Experience at a national law firm is an asset;
- Proven ability to deal with complex commercial legal issues involving multiple areas of the law and multiple jurisdictions;
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact with different departments and management levels across the WestJet Group;
- Experience with delivering training on a departmental and enterprise basis is an asset;
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills required;
- Ability to excel in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines and priorities;
- Committed team player with a great sense of humor; and
- Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.

WestJet is seeking a Legal Counsel with corporate/commercial and regulatory experience to join our dynamic legal team.
You will report to the Senior Vice President, General Counsel & Corporate Secretary, and primarily work alongside the Associate General Counsel – Operations & Corporate Regulatory. In this role you will assist in providing pragmatic and timely advice on all manner of legal issues facing the WestJet Group. A significant component of your role will involve working with the operations and regulatory teams assisting with all legal issues, including contract review, providing regulatory advice, and managing disputes and litigation with the support of external counsel. You will also assist in providing pragmatic and timely advice on all manner of corporate, commercial and other legal matters in support of the broader WestJet Group, strengthening an efficient and effective partnership between the various WestJet Group business units and the legal team.
You will have the passion, positive drive, and agility to deliver sophisticated advice in a high-volume and fast-paced environment for a variety of our internal clients. You will combine your strong business acumen and strategic legal counsel to partner with other members of the legal team, all levels of the organization as well as external legal counsel. You should have a pragmatic and professional nature, be able to establish and meet deadlines, and be a highly motivated, well-rounded self-starter with a high energy level. WestJet is also looking to you to be an active contributor to the business and take a value-added approach to the role.
