DESCRIPTION:
Under the general direction of the Director, Legal Services, Legal Counsel will provide timely and practical professional support and advice to FortisAlberta’s internal clients regarding a wide variety of matters. The successful candidate will be a highly skilled and self-motivated individual, who is familiar with a variety of commercial transactions and has demonstrated an ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of interdisciplinary teams.DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):
• Act as a trusted legal advisor to FortisAlberta Inc.’s internal stakeholders and executives on a wide variety of matters.
• Support other functional groups within FortisAlberta as assigned; this includes working with business teams on various initiatives.
• Consistently demonstrate a high level of professionalism in interactions with stakeholders and while working on varied work assignments.
• Work closely with internal clients to ensure that provided legal advice is responsive to the company’s immediate business needs, overall strategy and operational goals.
• Collaborate effectively with colleagues within the legal department and external counsel on a wide range of matters.
• Manage external counsel.
• Maintain an excellent working knowledge of legal developments that are relevant to the organization and its corporate goals, including participation in legal and industry groups, associations, seminars and continuing education.
• Special projects and other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
• Excellent organizational and time management skills, in order to manage multiple priorities and competing demands with tight timelines. A drive for results, with a demonstrated ability to prioritize, lead and execute with excellence on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Communication Skills
• Exceptional communication skills with the ability to explain, advocate, write, express and present facts and ideas in a clear and convincing manner to a variety of audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to listen objectively and clarify messages, give and receive feedback effectively.
• Proven ability to translate legal information to an understandable format for non-legal audiences.
• Demonstrated ability in using MS Office applications (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is essential.
Interpersonal Skills
• Proven ability to collaborate as part of a team and to develop and maintain effective relationships with team members and internal and external stakeholders of all levels is essential.
• Demonstrated ability to make recommendations and influence outcomes by providing practical advice based on contextual assessment, a demonstrated willingness to learn, and the creation of stakeholder confidence.
• Proven ability to demonstrate leadership and positively contributes to the morale and culture of the organization.
Strategic Thinking and Analytical Skills
• Proven ability to analyze complex legal issues and provide timely solutions that are appreciative of, and advance strategic operational goals.
• Solid business acumen, capable of applying jurisprudence and strategic thinking experience at corporate level; demonstrated capability to guide the business with their contractual and legal obligations.
• Demonstrated ability to engage in critical strategic thinking and make difficult decisions and exercise judgment based on careful analysis.
Continuous Improvement
• Proven ability to identify, create, and take advantage of new learning opportunities.
• Demonstrated willingness build a solid understanding of related law and practice and keep abreast of current developments and trends.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
• A law degree (LLB or JD) and a member of a provincial bar plus 3 years of related legal experience is required.
• Experience in Privacy Law, IT-related Procurement, or both, will be considered a strong asset.
• Experience working in a regulated environment, preferably within the electrical utility industry, will be considered an asset.
