      Legal Counsel or Senior Legal Counsel

      Legal Services, Capital Markets Regulation

      Join the dynamic team that develops and reviews securities legislation to ensure the efficient operation of the capital markets, and protection of the investing public in BC and Canada. You will gain expertise in, and be a key contributor to, the wide-ranging work done by the CMR legal services team, as our mandate covers a very broad range of registrant and marketplace activities.

      Key Responsibilities:

      You will be expected to work on a wide diversity of matters, which includes developing policy, drafting regulatory instruments, considering applications for exemptions from securities legislation, participating in CSA committees or working groups, and analyzing proposals from self-regulatory organizations (SROs) and/or marketplaces. You may also provide legal advice and services in respect of:

      Registrant regulation matters

      Marketplace structure & trading issues

      Fintech and emerging technology issues, including digital assets and artificial intelligence (in support of, or as part of, the Commission's Fintech and Innovation Team)

      SRO policy development and operations.

      You will also work closely with other professionals at the Commission and other regulatory agencies, represent the Commission on national and local committees and at industry conferences, and provide advice to senior staff and Commissioners about policy and legal issues. You will stay updated on industry trends, regulations, and best practices to proactively identify potential legal issues and provide informed recommendations.

      Qualifications:

      The successful candidate is a seasoned securities lawyer with substantial securities industry experience and ideally has exposure to legal issues involving financial technology and/or market regulation. You have membership in the Law Society of BC or are eligible for BC call. An in depth familiarity with the securities, financial and/or technology industries are assets, as is a solid knowledge of applicable securities laws and regulations, with experience in crafting compliant legal strategies. You have a proven ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Excellent analytical and communication skills (both written and verbal) and sound judgment are necessary qualifications, as are an ability to work autonomously and a strong desire to push your intellectual horizons.

      Salary Range:

      The salary range for Legal Counsel (generally up to 10 years of legal counsel experience) is $113,444 (minimum) - $151,014 (midpoint) - $188,585 (maximum).

      The salary range for Senior Legal Counsel (generally 10+ years of legal counsel experience) is $135,479 (minimum) - $175,947 (midpoint) - $216,414 (maximum).

      The starting salary for this position will be determined considering the successful candidate’s relevant experience and education, salaries of other employees in the same salary range, market conditions and other relevant factors. Starting salaries are normally below the salary band midpoint.
