- Conduct legal research regarding status of company’s protectable intellectual property or branding around identified business activities
- Review and compare company’s existing and contemplated conservation easements (CE’s); Draft a side-by-side abstract for easy reference by operating divisions illustrating material terms, similarities, and differences among CE’s
- Work on questions of black letter law across jurisdictions with respect to easements, adverse possession, prescriptive rights and similar real property concepts that can be utilized for training of company foresters and staff
- Interact with internal clients in multiple operational divisions to compile and compare terms of existing third party site and tower space leases/permits for cell towers, radio towers, communication sites, microwave reflectors, fire watch towers, etc. and update standard contract forms for use across divisions
- Become familiar with the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). Once an understanding is gained, request specific data from Green Diamond CA Timberlands to produce a document on impacts to biodiversity and ecosystem services.
- Priority will be given to applicants who have completed at least one school year at an accredited law school prior to the commencement of the internship.
- Work experience or undergraduate studies in forestry, natural resource management, business, real property or land use is helpful, but not required.
- Strong legal research, writing, and verbal communication skills required.
- Ability to balance and prioritize among multiple projects.
- Professional demeanor, highly self-motivated, organized, attentive to detail, and curious to explore the business of sustainably forestry management and the role of in-house counsel.
Purpose:
The purpose of the 2024 Green Diamond Legal Department Internship is to provide a law student with practical experience in the areas of legal research, legal writing, client relations, in-house legal advice, intellectual property, real property, contracts, and legal services management. The intern will also become acquainted with Green Diamond as a business and client, with an emphasis on in-house legal services relating to real property management, real property transactions, and commercial transactions. The intern can expect to acquire a better understanding of legal and policy issues of relevance and interest to the timber industry, as well as day-to-day business exposure to the role of in-house counsel. The Legal Department Internship is intended for students who are currently pursuing a Juris Doctorate or LLM professional law degree from an accredited law school.

Compensation:
The intern will be paid $28 per hour, subject to withholding for employment and income taxes applicable in the intern’s state of residence. An intern may elect to receive college credit in lieu of compensation if approved by the intern’s law school.
Location:
This internship may be completed using a home office at a remote location subject to Green Diamond conditions for the protection of Green Diamond’s confidential business records and IT systems. For Company tax nexus purposes, interns must be residents of or domiciled in the States of Alabama, California, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, Oregon, South Carolina, or Washington. If convenient, the intern will also have the option of using Company office space and IT system access in the following locations: Korbel, California; Athens, Georgia; Meridian Mississippi; Kalispell, Montana; Klamath Falls, Oregon; Seattle, Washington; Shelton, Washington; or Underwood, Washington.
Timing:
This posting is open until filled. The duration of the internship is anticipated to be up to 12 weeks during the summer months of 2024. Exact dates are to be mutually agreed upon between the company and the successful intern candidate based on the candidate’s academic calendar.
