      The Provincial Court of BC sits at over 80 locations throughout the Province and hears criminal, family, youth, and civil claims as well as traffic and municipal by-law matters. The Chief Judge of the Provincial Court is appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council and is responsible for assigning Judges and Judicial Justices, and designating court facilities for the hearing of cases within the jurisdiction of the court and for providing administrative direction to Judges, Judicial Justices, and Judiciary staff. The Office of the Chief Judge (OCJ), Integrated Judicial Services is the administrative headquarters for the Provincial Judiciary, and is based in downtown Vancouver.

      Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel, the Legal Counsel provides legal advice and assistance.

      Job Requirements:

      • A degree from a law school of recognized standing;
      • Either;
        • Legal Counsel Level 1: Up to five years of call;
        • Legal Counsel Level 2: From 6th to 11th year of call;
      • Membership in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia;
      • A minimum three years legal practice in British Columbia or engaged in an equivalent of three years experience as a judicial intern, law clerk, and in legal practice in Canada;
      • Preference may be given to experience in Provincial Court practices and procedures;
      • Experience in legal writing and research, and providing advice and preparing opinions on a variety of complex legal matters;
      • Experience in presentation of legal information to legal and lay audiences;
      • Preference may be given to applicants with Media experience; and
      • Preference may be given to those who have demonstrated family and/or civil law experience.

      Proviso:

      • This position will be required to travel throughout the province on occasion
      • Ability to work overtime

      About this Position:

      The Provincial Court is hiring one permanent position as a lawyer at either a Legal Counsel Level 1 or 2 (depending on the year of call of the successful applicant). This position is based at the Robson Square courthouse in Vancouver BC.

      Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.

      An eligibility list may be established.
