      Primary Purpose:

      Livingston High School is seeking a highly motivated, professional, energetic, and certified Navy, Marine, or Coast Guard Officer (W2-O6) to fill the Senior Naval Science Instructor (SNSI) position. This is an active and well-respected program in the community of Livingston and throughout the NJROTC Area. The program is involved in many NJROTC extra-curricular weekend competitions such as field meets, brain brawls, and STEM, as well as many community service activities. Candidates can expect to work before and after school hours, on some holidays, on weekends, and during the summer. The pay level meets MIP and is a 12-month contract available now.

      Qualifications:

      Education/Certification:

      Bachelor’s degree, associate degree, or high school diploma/GED

      Eligible to obtain JROTC certification from the US military service (Navy, Marines, Coast Guard)

      Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or related training and work experience for certification waivers under the District of Innovation Plan (DOI)

      Special Knowledge/Skills:

      Knowledge of core academic subject assigned

      Knowledge of curriculum and instruction

      Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

      Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

      Experience:

      Retired from the US military

      Major Responsibilities and Duties:

      Instructional Strategies

      1. Teaching the prescribed 3- or 4-year Naval Science curriculum.
      2. Writing/updating lesson plans for the NJROTC curriculum and other lesson preparation requirements. Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district’s and JROTC curriculum programs and show written evidence of preparation as required. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in individual student differences.
      3. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, equipment, and technology that reflect an understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned and present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
      4. Conduct an assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
      5. Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements. Counseling students in the NJROTC program.
      6. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
      7. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect an understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.

      Student Growth and Development

      1. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
      2. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
      3. Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of the school district.
      4. Instructing in military drill.
      5. Mentoring cadets and assisting with higher education or employment opportunities and goals.
      6. Planning extracurricular activities for the NJROTC unit (including color/honor guard ceremonies, drill team and rifle teams competitive meets, field trips, basic leadership training, ship cruises, etc.).
      7. Making annual presentations of the NJROTC program to students at feeder schools to recruit new cadets into the program.

      Classroom Management and Organization

      1. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
      2. Manage student behavior per the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
      3. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
      4. Assist in selecting books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
      5. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
      6. Ensure JROTC facilities are adequate and meet military requirements.
      7. Develop and maintain a merit/demerit system to reinforce positive behavior for JROTC.
      8. Requisitioning all government-furnished equipment (including uniforms, training aids, books, drill rifles, air rifles, andorganizational equipment).
      9. Arranging for cleaning and tailoring of uniforms.
      10. Surveying old and worn uniforms and other government property.
      11. Performing simple preventive maintenance of training aids and devices.
      12. Inventory control of all government-furnished equipment/materials (including annual wall-to-wall inventory).
      13. Ensuring proper physical security of all government-furnished equipment/materials.

      Communication

      1. Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
      2. Actively recruit students to enroll in JROTC programs and maintain or exceed cadet enrollment requirements.

      Professional Growth and Development

      1. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
      2. Maintain military proficiency on topics taught in the JROTC curriculum.
      3. Comply with state, and district regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
      4. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
      5. Maintaining financial accounts of operating budget.
      6. Preparing financial vouchers to the Navy for reimbursement of expenditures to the school, made in support of the NJROTC program.
      7. Preparing periodic reports on program administration and logistics.
      8. Keeping current and abreast of new developments and organizations within the Navy.
      9. Assessing unit progress to ensure NJROTC program objectives are met.
      10. Attending Navy-sponsored training to keep abreast of current requirements of program management.
      11. Taking courses of instruction to improve teaching abilities.

      Other

      1. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

      Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer, phone systems, video/instructional equipment, air rifles, and peripherals

      Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

      Motion: Frequent walking; repetitive computer work with frequent use of hands and wrists

      Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment

      Environment: Work inside from school, home, or location other than the school building, may work outside; regular exposure to noise and computer monitors. Regular community and occasional statewide travel

      Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
