      The Chester County Library, Exton, PA is seeking a PT reference librarian dedicated to serving our customers with enthusiasm, professionalism and an eye to the future.

      Responsibilities: to provide direct reference services and readers’ advisory to the public and to member libraries using various communication formats: face to face, telephone, e-mail, texting and chat. The librarian will also provide research help to customers both on and off the desk, participate in community outreach, work on special projects, and be a contributing member of the Reference Department in planning and implementing reference services. Continuing education is required and is provided by or through the Chester County Library.

      An ALA accredited M.L.S. degree is strongly preferred, M.L.S. candidates with appropriate coursework would be considered. Candidates should have broad-based reference experience, knowledge of online and electronic resources, including Internet, downloadable content, and familiarity with e-readers, mobile devices and tablets. Good verbal and written communication skills, ability to handle stressful and sometimes ambiguous situations, and a demonstrated commitment to public service are essential.

      All library positions require the following criminal background and child abuse clearances: Report of criminal history from the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP); Child Abuse History Clearance from the Department of Human Services (Child Abuse); and Fingerprint based federal criminal history submitted through the Pennsylvania State Police or its authorized agent (FBI).
      • Provide guidance in finding library materials.
      • Provide general reference and advisory services.
      • Complete assigned projects that support the library's annual goals and objectives.
      • Assist supervisor with daily operations and provide reports, as needed.
      • Assist in maintaining the library's database.
      • Perform other duties, tasks and special projects, as required.
      • Master's degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
      • Pennsylvania State Library Certificate.
      • One year of job-related library experience.
      • Broad-based reference experience.
      • General knowledge of library science.
      • Knowledge of the use of review sources.
      • Working knowledge of the American Library Association Library Bill of Rights.
      • Working knowledge of the Educational Film Library Association Freedom to View Statement.
      • Working knowledge of "Holds Procedures".
      • Required to participate in continuing education workshops, seminars and conferences as needed to keep current in the field.
      • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
      • Ability to handle stressful situations.
      • Ability to use common sense understanding to carry out written or verbal instructions.
      • Strong commitment to customer service.
      • Flexibility and ability to accept change.
      • Accurate and detail-oriented.
      • Basic skill to use a personal computer and various software packages.
      • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
      • Ability to establish priorities.
      • A valid driver's license is required.
      • Criminal background check.

      Preferred Skills:
      • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Library Science.
      • Familiarity with the principles and practices of public library service.
      • Strong communication skills in person and by phone.
      • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
      • Knowledge and skill with standard office equipment (e.g., fax, copier, calculator, etc.).
      • Exhibits sound and accurate judgment.

      To perform this job successfully, an individual should have:
