Arlington County’s Public Library is seeking a Cataloging and Metadata Library Assistant. The Library Assistant works as part of the Collections and Access Division that centrally acquires, catalogs, classifies, and processes all materials for eight libraries.

      Specific duties include:
      • Managing vendor shipments and receiving duties including unpacking and inventorying;
      • Supporting the ongoing upkeep and maintenance of the library’s cataloging, authority control, receiving and processing workflows.
      • Ensuring that print and non-print resources are accessible to borrowers in the most timely and cost-effective manner possible.
      • Assisting the manager in quality control for the cataloging and processing of all library materials, while maintaining proper cataloging standards and procedures.
      • Keeping abreast of emerging trends, innovations and best practices affecting library systems, catalogs;
      • Using cataloging and receiving tools such as Koha, OCLC Connexion Client; and
      • Performing copy cataloging in all formats.

      The ideal candidate will have the following:
      • Ability to support a broad and shared vision for innovative library services, demonstrate the ability to work quickly and accurately in a services and production-oriented environment, and thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing workspace; and
      • Understanding of typical collection development, acquisitions, and processing practices of a large library.

      Minimum: Two years of college education, Associates' Degree or equivalent number of credit hours plus some experience in library procedures or technical services related work.

      Substitution: Additional experience in library procedures can be substituted for the education on a year for year basis.

      Desirable: Preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following:
      • Knowledge of automated copy cataloging in a public library setting
      • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
      • Experience working with vendor outsourcing in a public library setting; and/or
      • Experience working with the Koha integrated library system and Aspen discovery layer.
      Work location and hours of work: Part-time 20 hours per week including some evening and weekend work. Actual work schedule is determined by the needs of the work location; assignment location could change over time. The current vacancy is at Central Library, Collections and Access Division, 1015 Quincy St., Arlington, VA 22201.

      Must be able to push and pull full book carts and lift boxes weighing up to 35 lbs.
