      Performs responsible para-professional work in the Children's Services Division of the Public Library. Work involves bringing children and their parents and teachers together with books and information through reference work, programs, etc.; does related work as required. Includes outreach services to schools and community events.

      Work is performed under regular supervision.
      • Performs general reference and reader's advisory work, searches for information upon request using automated system, the Internet and other informational tools and assists in locating needed books and materials.
      • Checks in and out materials, sorts, shelves, straightens books and audio-visual materials and kits, and checks each item on the shelves to assure it is in proper sequence.
      • Assists the division with periodicals, reserves, teacher's packs, weeding, repairing, discarding, and cleaning library materials.
      • Plans and conducts passive and active programs, including regularly scheduled programs, seasonal programs, tours, field trips, crafts, and others.
      • Acts as public relations representative to the community including public and private schools, homeschool co-op groups, daycares, businesses, etc.
      • Creates materials for promoting libraries and reading including in print and electronic flyers, and displays.
      • Assists in requesting supplies, receiving, and organizing.
      • Assist with children’s volunteer programs like Jr. Friends, Buddies, and others.
      • Assists the division with signature events like Spring Egg Hunt, Trunk or Treat, Summer Jubilee, Holiday Stroll, Open House, and others.
      • Assists in special projects at the managers’ request.
      • Must be able to work flexible hours including rotational nights and weekends and occasional coverage of nights and weekends.
      • Collaborates with other divisions to achieve the library’s mission and values.
      • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
      • Formal education which includes basic business office practices, arithmetic and/or business math, typing, research, computer skills, principles of research and filing, and public speaking skills.
      • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
      • Must be able to work flexible hours including nights and weekends.
      • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
      Preferred Qualifications
      • College course work in Early Childhood Development or Education or experience with children preferred.
      • Experience working with younger children preferred.
      • Creative or artistic interest and ability preferred.
      • English and Spanish Language skills preferred.
      Physical Requirements
      • Reaching - Extending the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction, but normally to the front or side.
      • Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands.
      • Fingering - Picking, pinching, or otherwise working with fingers primarily, rather than the whole hand or arm as in handling.
      • Employee must reach to answer telephone, file, work with computer terminal, etc. Handles books, materials, various forms, documents, files, pencils, pens etc., requiring use of hands and fingers.
      • Talking and/or Hearing: This is a public contact position, so it is necessary for this person to be able to communicate with people in person and over the telephone. Employee speaks and performs programs in front of various groups of people.
      • Seeing: The ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye. Recommended guidelines for vision are:
        Acuity, far - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Not required. Both eyes 20/25 - R 20/30 - L 20/30 corrected
        • Acuity, near - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Both eyes 20/25 corrected.
        • Depth Perception - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Depth Perception - 4
        • Field of Vision - Area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point.
      • Accommodation - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from eye.
      • All five aspects are judged to be important in carrying out the essential functions of this job.
      • Light to Medium Work: Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to carry and/or move books and other material. Work usually requires walking, standing, bending, stooping, stretching, reaching, or climbing steps to a significant degree, however, the worker does sit on occasion.

      • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks and practical situations and requests made by supervisor, other employees, or members of the general public; to comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in an expedient manner; to relate and communicate with children in person and in print. Must interpret information so good judgment is essential.
      Mathematics Ability
      • Using arithmetic and/or Statistics: Ability to direct and oversee the use of arithmetic and/or statistics in the preparation of a variety of tests and reports.
      Language Ability
      • The ability to speak, read and write the English Language are required for this position.

      • The Library Associate is subject to working inside or outdoors.
      Hazards
      • No environmental hazards indicated for this position. The work performed is subject to the final standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines.
      Machinery/Tools/Work Aids/Other Equipment
      • Computer, laminating machine, calculator, staple gun, paper cutter, copier, ladder, film projector, pens, pencils, Personnel Resolution, reference books, book carts, cd player, hot glue gun, iron, telephone, and letter machine.
