      Shift: Monday - Saturday, including some evening hours

      Assists the general public with library and reference materials and provides other necessary library functions within established guidelines by performing the following duties


      ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

      Regular attendance is required.

      Assists library patrons, including but not limited to:

      • Checking materials in and out
      • Accepting requests for library materials
      • Answering questions
      • Providing light reference and readers’ advisory service
      • Answering the telephone and directing calls as necessary
      • Assisting with computer and printer/copier use

      Implements library policy and regulations

      Operates online automated circulation system (ILS)

      Handles procedures for overdue, lost, or damaged materials

      Counts money and prepares daily reports

      Shelves library material as needed

      Assists with library programs as needed, including program preparation and presentation

      Records daily statistics

      Attends staff meetings and serves on committees as requested.

      Reconciles ILS-generated reports

      Performs other work as needed, including but not limited to special projects and supervisor assignments


      SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

      This is not a supervisory position.

      QUALIFICATIONS

      EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

      High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


      LANGUAGE SKILLS

      Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak effectively to customers and employees of the organization.


      MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

      Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.


      REASONING ABILITY

      Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.


      ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

      Familiarity with general database concepts and a demonstrated ability through work history or training to learn specific concepts and practices associated with the current ILS used by the Brazoria County Library System.

      Familiarity with contemporary best practices of PC use, peripheral equipment, and network interfaces.

      Working knowledge of the current Windows operating system and Microsoft Office.

      Ability to type at least 30 words per minute with a high degree of accuracy.
