      The City of Mission Viejo seeks qualified candidates to serve as our next part-time Library Page to provide excellent customer service to library patrons. Candidates will assist with shelving and filing all library materials using different filing systems; collecting, sorting, organizing and filing any materials used in the library; and moving furniture and equipment as needed; assisting in the Passport Office with check-in procedures and taking photos; assisting with Library programs as needed.

      There are two (2) vacancies to work at the Mission Viejo Library. Position 1 schedule: Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; Monday and Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Position 2 schedule: Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Monday from 9:00 1.m. to 1:00 p.m.; Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; and Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The eligibility list established for this recruitment may be used by the City to fill future Library Page vacancies.

      The first round of interviews is tentatively scheduled for the week of August 5, 2024. Only one date will be available for an applicant to attend. The City will not accommodate applicant scheduling requests for alternative dates.

      Library Pages are considered Hourly, Seasonal, and/or Temporary employees, and are not part of the competitive service. Incumbents will work a flexible part-time schedule, with an average of 12 to 19 hours per week, with increased scheduling during peak workload periods, but less than 1,000 hours during assignments through the fiscal year starting July 1st and ending June 30th.

      The City of Mission Viejo Library is typically open to the public: Monday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Friday, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Sunday, 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The individual selected must be able to work a flexible schedule that may include, but is not limited to, evenings, weekends, and holidays. The schedule will vary depending on the needs of the City.
      Your impact
      1. Promote positive relationships with the public, management team, fellow staff members, and volunteers.
      2. Provide the highest of standards of customer service, information, and communication to the public while upholding promoting the Library’s programs and policies.
      3. Promote library programs and materials and get the public excited about the abundance of resources at the library
      4. Instruct the public how to use library technology and access resources in order to get the most out of their library experience
      5. Provide on-demand reference assistance while providing outstanding customer service
      6. Promote and encourage literacy among the community of Mission Viejo
      7. Promote and advocate digital and computer literacy
      8. Engage youth through educational and recreational programming
      9. Assist with the implementation of diverse, inclusive, and equitable programming for all members of the community but especially babies, toddlers, and youth
      10. Empower young readers to become lifelong library users by sharing popular reading recommendations
      11. Provide resources to underserved population in Mission Viejo by referring them to local agencies to ensure that all members of the community are seen and given the help they need

      The Mission Viejo Library serves over 190,000 total cardholders and circulates over 835,000 items annually. Cultural Services hosts hundreds of classes and provides dozens of programs throughout the year.       IDEAL CANDIDATE
      • Able to work a minimum of 12 to 19 hours per week which may include early morning, evenings, and weekends;
      • Knowledge of alphabetical and numeric filing system;
      • Knowledge of purpose and functions of the library;
      • Knowledge of techniques for providing a high level of customer service to the public and City staff;
      • Strong work experience working independently with minimal supervision;
      • Ability to interact and work with people from varying age groups and diverse backgrounds;
      • Learn, understand, and apply library policies and procedures; and
      • Demonstrate good oral and written communications skills.
      Knowledge of:
      • Alphabetical and decimal numeric filing system.
      • Purpose and functions of the library.
      • Effective public relations.
      • General principles of risk management related to the functions of the assigned area.
      • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service to public and City staff, in person and over the telephone.
      • Safe driving principles and practices.
      • Safe work practices.


      Skill in:
      • Working with minimum supervision.
      • Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
      • Understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions.
      • Using tact, initiative, prudence and independent judgment within general policy, procedural and legal guidelines.
      • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees and those contacted in the course of the work.
      • Operating modern office equipment including computer equipment and software programs.
      • Operating a motor vehicle safely.
      Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

      Equivalent to the completion of ninth (9th) grade and some experience, paid or unpaid, in a library setting is desirable. Previous computer experience is desirable.

      LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
      Must be fifteen (15) years of age or older. Applicants under the age of eighteen (18) who are required to attend school must provide a valid California Worker’s Permit prior to appointment.
