      Description

      Under the general supervision of the Commandant and direction of the Cadre 4 - Shift Leaders, performs responsible personal development and skills training work for youth enrolled in the Lincoln’s Challenge Academy. Supervises the daily activities of an assigned group of cadets involving direct and continuing responsibility for their security, welfare, and development. Serves as Lead Worker over Cadre 2 – Sr Assistant Team Leader.

      Job Responsibilities

      1. Applies military principles and practices of guiding and training cadets while exercising responsibility for the daily activities of assigned cadets in an assigned team. Maintains high degree of discipline as required. Responsible for successful training of all Acclimation tasks and required Cadet Tracking System data entry.

      2. Directs teams in general housekeeping, repair and maintenance work, teaches correct use of tools and working techniques for work projects, promotes and fosters leadership, cooperation, and instructs cadets in group dynamics.

      3. Establishes and maintains good interpersonal relationships with cadets; listens to personal problems with interest and empathy, offers assistance and practical advice when possible, and advises supervisors and appropriate departments on more serious problems.

      4. Evaluates progress of assigned cadets, completes and verifies reports for accuracy, and recommends and implements disciplinary measures when required. Physically restrains cadets with aggressive behavior to restore order in accordance with policy and procedures.

      5. Provides direction of activities and on the job training of Cadre 1 - Assistant Team Leaders regarding leadership, team dynamics, and enforcement of cadet standards. Evaluates performance of Cadre Team Leaders (Assistant Team Leaders) and imposes minor disciplinary actions or counseling when required.

      6. Accountable for daily team staffing requirements. Ensures replacement for staff that has failed to report for shift, and/or assumes the shift in the event that replacement staff is unavailable.

      7. Ensures safe transport of cadets between locations, i.e., dorms, physical training areas, work sites, medical treatment, recreation, and various activities. Makes periodic fire safety checks, quiets disturbed floors, reports all incidents, resolves disturbances, and seeks prompt treatment for cadet illnesses.

      8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

      Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

      Requires knowledge of military structure and procedures.

      Requires ability to manage a team and maintain a military atmosphere conducive to development of cadets.

      Requires the ability to establish patterns of communications with cadets.

      Requires ability to analyze and evaluate the progress and development of assigned cadets and present verbal and written reports.

      Requires the ability to enforce disciplinary, safety, and security members.

      Requires the ability to use and teach the usage of simple household or hand tools.

      Requires physical strength and ability to carry out physical restraint procedures when necessary.

      Requires a valid Illinois driver's license and the ability to obtain a CDL driver’s license within six (6) months from the date of employment.

      Employment Conditions

      Must be willing to adhere to organizational grooming standards and present a professional appearance while wearing organizational issued, activity appropriate attire while on shift.

      Education

      For Military Applicants:

      Requires the completion of High School or GED. Associate’s Degree with course work in social science preferred. Requires four (4) years progressive military experience. Requires satisfactory completion of a four-year active military service tour or a six-year National Guard or Reserve component enlistment or tour, active membership in the National Guard or Reserve component, or Military retirement (20 years creditable service). Must have received an honorable discharge from the military service. Completion of Advanced Leadership Course (ALC) or equivalent course preferred.

      For Non-Military Applicants:

      - Requires completion of High School or GED. Requires six years direct experience working with or leading at-risk adolescents/teen agers in non-for profit, governmental or faith-based settings such as youth services, social services, education or law enforcement agencies.

      - Requires associate’s degree in a related field. Requires four years direct experience working with or leading at-risk adolescents/teen agers in non-for profit, governmental or faith-based settings such as youth services, social services, education or law enforcement agencies.

      - Requires a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Requires two years direct experience working with or leading at-risk adolescents/teen agers in non-for profit, governmental or faith-based settings such as youth services, social services, education or law enforcement agencies.

      PRIOR CADRE 1 - ASSISTANT TEAM LEADER (ATL) EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
