      Responsible for locating, marking, and documenting various underground pipelines owned or operated by Marathon. A Line Rider must have a very diverse background of locating buried utilities. A Line Rider must have attended or be willing to attend a Marathon approved locating training program and must have or be willing to obtain a certificate of that training. A Line Rider must have a good computer background in systems like Google Earth or similar GIS mapping systems, Excel, Word, as well as DigTrack or a similar ticket management system. A Line Rider will be used to locate and mark all Marathon underground utilities, will standby and witness all third-party line crossings, document such crossings, update/close out tickets, fill out and file all required paperwork, as well as updating site drawings. A Line Rider must be a self-starter and be able to perform work with little supervision. Marathon will supply all line locating equipment. The Line Rider will interact with all construction, maintenance and I&E crews daily. When not doing locates, or monitoring third party excavations, the Line Rider will perform Right of Way (ROW) inspections. This position is represented by the United Steel Workers and is part of a progression. The chosen candidate must reach Level 2 within 24 months of hire.

      1. Manages One-Call and ticket management systems equipment.

      2. Maintains line locating technical skills and competency.

      3. Champions Ground Disturbance processes and procedures.

      4. Conforms with and abide by regulations, policies, work procedures, and instructions.

      5. Participates in an afterhours on call rotation.

      6. Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental oversight to ensure a safe and environmentally sound operation.

      7. Availability to respond to emergencies.

      8. Works after-hours via on-call schedule (night and weekend work is occasionally required).

      Education

      • Minimum High school diploma or GED required.
      • Completion of an accredited Line Locator Certification program preferred.

      Experience

      • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in regulated petroleum or gas pipeline operations or construction.
      • 1-2 years’ experience in underground utility locating, including pipelines preferred.
      • Requires willingness and ability to be located within a seventy-five (75) mile radius of the LA Basin in order to respond to call-out situations.
      • Basic understanding of Pipeline Operations preferred.
      • Ability to produce and maintain a valid driver’s license

      Special Skills

      • Organized, with strong focus on accurate reporting and detailed data management.
      • Ability to communicate with cross functional work teams.
      • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet required deadlines.
      • Proficient computer skills.
      • Working knowledge of DOT guidelines as pertaining to pipeline systems.
      • Trained and skilled in the use of required line locating equipment, techniques, and processes preferred.
      • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

      Physical demands

      • Walking on uneven surfaces, including grass, asphalt, dirt, sand, and near open trenches while speaking with crews
      • Grasping with hands, bending, squatting, kneeling, some overhead opening and closing, some climbing of stairs, standing and sitting
      • Lifting, pushing, pulling with force of 0-10 lbs
