      General Summary

      Installs, repairs, modifies, and opens a variety of locking mechanisms found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes, and vaults.

      Essential Duties and Responsibilities

      • Examines locking mechanism and installs new unit or disassembles unit and replaces worn tumblers, springs, and other parts or repairs them by filing, drilling, chiseling and grinding.
      • Opens door locks by moving lock pick in cylinder or opens safe locks by listening to lock sounds or by drilling.
      • Changes combination by inserting new or repaired tumblers into lock. Cut new or duplicate keys using impressions or code key machines.
      • Disassemble mechanical or electrical locking devices, and repair or replace worn tumblers, springs, and other parts, using hand tools.
      • Keep records of locks and keys. Establishes and maintains master key systems for buildings.
      • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

      Skills and Requirements

      • Certified, bonded locksmith

      Work Environment

      • Occasional and/or light lifting required--limited exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., but none to the point of being disagreeable.
      • May involve minor safety hazards where likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc.
