      Job summary

      Homerton University Hospital is looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic anaesthetist with a variety of interests including obstetric and paediatric anaesthesia to provide anaesthetic services and an on call commitment at the Homerton Hospital. This post has arisen due to expansion of services.

      The post is offered on a full time basis of 10 programmed activities, 8 DCC & 2 SPA. The post includes a commitment to an on-call service which covers general, obstetric emergencies and also support to ITU and A&E which includes care of acutely ill children.

      Main duties of the job

      To provide training and service for the provision of service to the anaesthetic department which will include flexibility of fixed commitments. In addition, to maintain and develop an environment of clinical and academic excellence.

      To participate in a rota which facilitates appropriate consultant leadership and provides on-call cover at night, weekends and during periods of leave.

      To assist in the provision of services within the SWSH directorate, demonstrating flexibility and co-operation when required

      To participate in the Directorate's clinical meetings

      About us

      Homerton Hospital provides general hospital and community services to Hackney and the City of London, and specialist care in obstetrics, neonatology, fetal medicine, fertility, bariatric surgery, and neuro rehabilitation across east London and beyond. The hospital provides a full range of general acute services for the local population and a range of specialist services for patients from further afield. These include perinatal (level 3 NICU) and fertility services, bariatric and laparoscopic surgery, and stroke and neuro-rehabilitation. The hospital has three day surgery theatres and five main operating theatres for all types of general surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, gynaecology, maxillo-facial, urology, ENT and obstetrics. There is a 10-bedded combined adult intensive care / high dependency unit. A major capital expansion programme is in hand to expand the operating provision with a new elective centre which providing 2 additional operating theatres. As one of London's designated peri-natal centres, Homerton provides a highly specialised range of obstetric and neonatal services. The Trust's community services offer a full range of adult and children's services and many of these are delivered in conjunction with partner organisations within the local health and social care economy.

      Clinical Duties

      To provide training and service for the provision of service to the anaesthetic department which will include flexibility of fixed commitments. In addition, to maintain and develop an environment of clinical and academic excellence.

      To assist in the recruitment of trainee medical staff

      Research & Audit

      To be actively involved in audit and quality improvement projects and to support the Trusts Clinical Governance programme.

      To initiate and participate in agreed research projects, within the post- holders field of specialist expertise.

      To implement audit and research findings as appropriate.

      To participate / organise journal clubs as appropriate.

      Policy & Planning

      To contribute to the development of clinical, treatment and organisational protocols.

      To review and develop policies for clinical practice and effectiveness.

      To assist in the development of the Directorates Annual Service Plan where appropriate.

      To participate in strategic planning for the services

      Communication & Management

      To support the Trust in its aim to provide the best possible care to patients.

      To participate in all aspects of the Directorate and Hospitals affairs, including attendance at relevant Consultant and Directorate meetings and to represent the department on appropriate committees/working parties when required.

      To monitor, with appropriate managers, performance indicators for the service and implement action as necessary.

      To provide prompt and effective advice to those within the directorate, and to seek their views on service developments, where appropriate.

      To assist in the effective handling of patient complaints.

      The on-call commitment will be solely at the Homerton University Hospital NHS Trust, on a 1:16 basis.The timetable is provisional and will be subject to a formal review after 3 months or sooner in the light of the changing needs of the post and local circumstances. The post holder will be expected to be flexible and co-operative in accordance with the requirements of the departments especially in view of the post COVID 19 operating which constrains our hospital.
