      Job summary

      This is an opportunity for a motivated individual to join the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust.

      This is a temporary post, and it is expected that the appointee can complement the skills and the sub-specialities in the department. Although the post is temporary, there is potential to make the post permanent.

      The appointee will be expected to support the Maxillofacial unit by assisting in all aspects for recovery of services. During the fixed term appointment there will be the opportunity to have access to our specialist team with skills in orthognathic surgery, paediatric OMFS (as part of SLA with Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Trust), oral surgery and trauma.

      The Unit is a regional centre for Head and Neck Cancer, Cleft, Craniofacial and Skull Base Surgery. There are close working relationships with ENT and Plastics.

      University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is the largest multi-site trust in UK. The Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery Department works across three sites: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Good Hope Hospital (GHH) and Solihull Hospital (SH). The Trust is a regional centre for cancer, trauma, burns & plastics and has the largest solid organ transplantation programme in Europe. This post is predominantly based at Solihull Hospital (SH) with some clinics Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).

      Main duties of the job

      The Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery Department has 13 OMFS consultants, 1 Oral Surgery consultant and 5 staff grades. It also employs 2 Consultant Orthodontists. The appointee will be expected to undertake cross-site working. Elective theatre sessions will be at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and Birmingham Children's Hospital (BCH). Outpatient clinics are held at City Hospital, BCH and QEH.

      The job plan will include a commitment to clinic and theatre as well as an expectation for on-call cover on a 1-13 rota. Time will be given for admin and supporting professional activities.

      The successful applicant will be expected to work across three sites including the Queen Elizabeth, the City Hospital and Birmingham Children's Hospital. They will be expected to have subspecialist skills in orthognathic and paediatric maxillofacial surgery.

      They will be expected to run outpatient clinics and operating sessions on a weekly basis across three sites.

      They should be able to work independently within a tertiary centre with close working relationships alongside other consultants. They should be able to independently manage an on-call commitment within a major trauma centre.
