LVMPD internships are unpaid volunteer positions. LVMPD internships are offered only to current college students, not granted to individuals merely wanting to obtain work experience, and must be performed in return for college credits toward graduation. Internships are generally performed on a part time basis, for instance, 20 hours per week, within one semester. No free housing is offered, regardless of whether the successful candidate is an out-of-state student.
Interns have no law enforcement power. They are students currently in an advanced stage of their college studies desiring to pursue a career in criminal justice or law enforcement upon college graduation. Typically assigned a mentor, interns acquire the necessary knowledge and skills while providing non-commissioned, non-hazardous support and/or research services to the LVMPD unit assigned.Internship applicants must:

Due to limited availability, internships are rarely offered to applicants not majoring in the above fields.** No intern candidates are exempted from the background process, regardless of their previous employment with the military or any jurisdiction. Out of state applicants must take the above into consideration before they apply, so that their graduation requirements can be met.
At this time, the LVMPD does not hire intern applicants on a provisional hire basis. Therefore, all background requirements must be completed prior to the start of the internship.**Due to security reasons, personal belongings permitted in the facility will be limited. Items such as large backpacks, briefcases, duffle bags or similar items may not be allowed. Those items permitted will be left to the discretion of the LVMPD employees conducting the process and may be subject to a search.
