- Performs a variety of work in the maintenance, repair, and minor construction work involving street resurfacing, repair, and patching; sidewalk, curb, gutter removal and replacement; graffiti removal; parks and public landscape maintenance; repairs or installation of regulatory signs; repair of irrigation equipment; and tree trimming/removal.
- Performs routine maintenance and repair on parks and playgrounds; inspects and repairs playground apparatus; inspects, repairs, replaces, and maintains simple water features and drinking fountains; corrects and/or reports safety hazards, graffiti, and vandalism; paints and repairs park furnishings; checks and cleans trails and restrooms; stocks materials and supplies, as necessary.
- Performs a variety of duties related to the maintenance and care of assigned sports fields; prepares fields; rakes leaves, cleans walks, courts, and other facilities; picks up rubbish and other debris; performs general grounds cleaning.
- Assists in the maintenance of sprinklers and irrigation equipment.
- Spreads asphalt in patching and repairing of streets.
- Pours and finishes concrete; constructs concrete forms and performs rough carpentry work.
- Installs traffic cones and barricades around work areas to ensure safety of staff and the general public.
- Install traffic signs and posts and removes signs and posts that are no longer required.
- Operates a variety of light and heavy-duty maintenance and construction equipment; operates a variety of hand and power tools; operates specialized equipment as assigned; inspects tools and equipment for safety and mechanical defects and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
- Clears roadside and other City properties including encampments and illegal waste disposal.
- Maintains, cleans, and clears storm drains, pipes, catch basins, creek areas, and other stormwater systems.
- Respond to emergency situations as assigned.
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date records on materials and supplies used in the performance of a variety of projects.
- Respond to questions and concerns from the public; provides customer service and information and/or resolves service requests within the scope of authority.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Possession of a current and valid California Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record to be maintained throughout employment. An out-of-state license may be used during the hiring process, but a valid California Driver’s License must be obtained prior to appointment.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within two (2) months of employment, certification as an OSHA-approved forklift operator.
- Materials, methods, practices, tools, and equipment used in public works and park maintenance repair activities.
- Techniques, tools, and materials used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, gutters, sidewalks, storm drains, and related facilities.
- Irrigation system installation, maintenance, and repair.
- Traffic safety such as properly directing traffic and setting of cones and barriers to maintain safe work and driving areas.
- Use of hand and power tools.
- Basic knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance.
- Basic arithmetic.
- Basic record keeping.
- Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations as well as industry standards and best practices pertinent to the assigned area of responsibility.
- City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.

- Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and programs, projects, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.

The Maintenance Worker classification is a key role within the Public Works Department and works collaboratively with internal staff, the community, outside vendors and contractors to address routine and urgent maintenance needs across the community. The Maintenance team works diligently to maintain City buildings and facilities, parks and landscapes, streets and sidewalks, and more, while also responding to emergencies, urgent maintenance issues, and special events after hours, on weekends, and holidays, and identifying and addressing safety hazards to ensure the City of El Cerrito is safe and enjoyable for everyone.

This recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill future Maintenance Worker I/II positions as they become available. The City is also open to considering qualified candidates who are interested in part-time maintenance work.
This position can be flexibly filled from Grade 604 (Entry) or 630, depending on experience.

Maintenance Services Worker I/II : Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
Experience:
Maintenance Services Worker I : At least six (6) months of experience as a construction laborer and/or performing general maintenance work.
Maintenance Services Worker II : Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in street, park, public building and grounds, or other public works maintenance work comparable to a Maintenance Services Worker I with the City.
