      Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and operation of city streets, sidewalks, drainage, and public rights of way. Work is performed under close supervision with minimal latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment.The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.

      • Maintains and clears ditches, drains, grates, storm sewer, and drainage outfalls
      • Removes and installs screen baskets in storm sewer inlets
      • Installs storm sewer pipes including excavation, dewatering, earthwork, compaction, and restoration
      • Performs road sign maintenance, assembly, installation, and repair
      • Performs pavement striping and markings
      • Patches, fills, and compacts asphalt
      • Assists in repair and maintenance of streetlights and traffic signals which includes aerial work
      • Operates equipment and mechanical tools such as chain saws, concrete grinders, liquid asphalt applicators, etc.
      • Performs routine maintenance to ensure proper operating condition of vehicles and equipment to include cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, and monitoring fluid levels
      • Sets up and operates portable generators and dewatering pumps
      • Performs painting as needed
      • Forms and repairs concrete including sidewalk and curb construction and grinding.
      • Mixes concrete, fills sandbags
      • Excavates soil and places/removes gravel with hand tools
      • Performs vacuum excavations with vacuum truck
      • Repairs and installs storm sewer pipes, inlets, and outfalls
      • Installs filter fabric and riprap
      • Removes and replaces sod
      • Maintains general records to include daily work orders, tasks completed, supplies and materials utilization, equipment used and/or serviced, and fuel usage
      • Cleans equipment and tools after use; maintains cleanliness and order in storage areas
      • Serves as after-hours and emergency on-call staff for streets and drainage issues as scheduled
      • Installs and removes traffic cones, barricades, and electronic message boards.
      • Fixes flat tire punctures with plugs
      • Collects/disposes of debris and litter; Removes and disposes of roadkill
      • Loads and hauls materials in flatbed truck
      • Loads and dumps debris in dump trailer
      • Performs tree cutting
      • Attends and participates in a minimum of 10 hours of Public Works/safety related training annually
      • May operate specialized vehicles and/or equipment based on area of assignment
      • Performs other duties as directed by the crew leader or supervisor
      • Interacts courteously and professionally with the public as needed
      Supervision:
      • None
      High school diploma or GED; supplemented by some experience in a least one of the functional maintenance areas outlined herein; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience. Must have a valid Florida driver’s license. May require a Florida commercial driver’s license or additional license endorsement(s) based on area of assignment.

      Candidate is subject to interview(s), medical testing (including drug screening), and a comprehensive background investigation.In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications listed above, an individual must be able to perform each of the established essential functions in order to perform this job successfully.

      PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
      Depending on the functional area of assignment, tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, usually involving lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds). Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and/or use of proper techniques and moving equipment. Tasks may involve some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.

      ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
      Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes).

      SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
      Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing.
