      POSITION SUMMARY

      The Manager of Exhibitions and Curatorial Projects is a key member of The Phillips Collection’s talented curatorial team. The ideal candidate enjoys working collaboratively to realize a world-class exhibition program that furthers the museum’s commitment to making art welcoming and accessible to broad and diverse audiences. The Manager of Exhibitions and Curatorial Projects oversees administrative tasks involved in the planning and implementation of special exhibitions, permanent collection installations, commissions, special projects, and curatorial publications, establishing timelines and ensuring projects stay on schedule and on budget.

      This is a full-time position reporting to the Chief Curator with full benefit eligibility.

      RESPONSIBILITIES (include and are not limited to):

      • Fully engages in advancing the museum’s strategic plan and DEIA efforts.
      • Manage, from planning to implementation, the museum’s exhibitions, commissions, and rotations of the collection, including production of wall texts, graphics, painting, construction and design in collaboration with internal colleagues and outside vendors.
      • Oversee production of curatorial publications, including solicitation of bids, preparation of catalogue specs, coordinating of manuscript materials, creation and monitoring of timelines, gathering images and rights for catalogues, corresponding with authors/publishers/editors/designers, reviewing and compiling edits to page and color proofs and bluelines, and participating in design and content meetings.
      • Develop, manage, and communicate schedules for installations, commissions, and exhibition activities and related events. Lead regular logistics meetings with curatorial team to review progress, set priorities, and ensure follow-up on action items.
      • Prepare and actively update the advance exhibitions calendar, curatorial calendar, and input curatorial activities onto museum-wide calendar.
      • Communicate effectively with partners, venues, curators, scholars, lenders, and other collaborators.
      • Oversee the use of virtual gallery for installations of the collection. Enter data and images of works into virtual gallery or equivalent program.
      • Schedule installation photography.
      • Assist fundraising efforts by assembling checklists, budgets, and other deliverables required for grants and funding applications.
      • Develop, in collaboration with curators and head of design, a prospectus for each exhibition.
      • Prepare,monitor, and actively maintain department and special exhibition budgets.
      • Prepare payment requisition forms for exhibition-related and departmental expenses.
      • Plan and lead interdepartmental exhibition planning and post-mortem meetings.
      • In consultation with chief curator, coordinate curatorial meetings, including compiling agenda items, materials, and the distribution of minutes.
      • Participate in cross-departmental meetings and workgroups to support institution-wide as well as curatorial-related initiatives, as requested.
      • Respond to general inquiries and letters from artists, scholars, the public,and other museums.
      • Prepare and steward internal review of exhibition partnership and venue contracts and maintain file for same.
      • Draft guest curator and artist agreements.
      • In consultation with curators, serve as the logistical liaison for artists engaged to create new works or installations.
      • Research, coordinate, and prepare material for works proposed for acquisition and prepare PowerPoint presentations and minutes for the quarterly Arts Committee meetings of board of trustees.
      • Maintain a consistent, centralized system to organize and archive curatorial records on the museum’s preferred shared drive / digital asset system.
      • Perform other duties as assigned.

      QUALIFICATIONS:

      • BA degree in Art History or Museum Studies with a concentration in Art History.
      • Knowledge of modern and contemporary art and art practices
      • At least two years of museum experience, specifically exhibition planning and implementation.
      • Knowledge of best practices and processes in museum display, exhibition design, and graphics.
      • Excellent writing, editing, proof reading, and research skills.
      • Demonstrated record of agile project and time management.
      • Ability to build positive relationships with staff across all departments as well as with external partners, artists, and collaborators.
      • Strong collaborator and inclusive community builder.
      • Superior communication, detail-oriented, and organizational skills.
      • Ability to prioritize and complete a wide range of tasks and move quickly between different kinds of activities.
      • Experience with Microsoft Full Suite Office Programs and Microsoft 365 and database programs (Filemaker Pro and/or Mimsy desirable).
      • Fluency in Microsoft Excel and spreadsheets.
