Determine event goals and objectives in consultation with senior leadership, bringing forward collated ideas and engagement from faculty, staff, students, and potential external partners
Formulate assume responsibility and accountability for implementing strategies and tactics that ensure goals and objectives are met
Source and allocate internal/external resources (human/financial) for maximum benefit
Assess and evaluate existing event strategies and plans to identify opportunities for improvement (event effectiveness)
Collaborate with senior leadership to identify potential growth opportunities (brand recognition, revenue, sponsorship, program awareness, etc.)
Manage relationships with key event stakeholders, strategic partners, vendors, and suppliers
Research market and industry trends that will impact event performance
Advise on and resolve sensitive issues and requests, consulting leaders and stakeholders when necessary
Conduct participant needs analysis to ensure event relevance and value
Identify and evaluate event performance (individual and organizational participant performance; individual and team performance; sponsorship ROI; supplier performance, etc.) and recommend opportunities for evolution and improvement
Bachelor’s Degree and at least 4 years of experience planning and executing on major events and/or strategic initiatives. 8 years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Experienced project and time manager
Extremely organized with great attention to detail
Excellent management skills with the ability to lead, facilitate, motivate, and organize
Experience working in a higher education is preferred, but not required
The School of Data Science at the University of Virginia is seeking a Manager or Director of Strategic Initiatives and Major Events. This position will oversee the formulation and implementation of event strategy for all events that support major initiatives of the school and Dean. They will define the goals, success metrics, and messaging for strategic events. They will build relationships with key stakeholders internally and externally, across the University, as well as develop a network of vendors and suppliers. They will implement best practices and develop planning standards, policies, and procedures that best support the school’s mission and organizational needs. As part of the core administrative team, this position will report to the Associate Dean for Administration and work closely with Development, Communications, and the Dean to align priorities and recommend and implement strategic pathways for the school.

About the School: The School of Data Science (SDS) – UVA’s 12th school, established in 2019 – is positioning the University as a global leader in efforts to improve society through teaching, research and service based on the powerful, emerging field of data science. SDS is a school without walls and seeks to establish new and exciting types of relationships to achieve excellence in collaborative, open, and interdisciplinary research. SDS helps to meet the soaring demand for qualified data science professionals as responsible and diverse leaders in a field that plays a key role in the global information-based economy. The work crosses disciplines, departments, schools and colleges to leverage UVA’s combined capabilities in data science, and to create meaningful partnerships with government, corporate, and community partners committed to responsible, collaborative, open, and inclusive data science.
Qualifications:
Anticipated hiring range: $80,000 - $90,000
