      Your opportunity:

      The Office of Communications is the proactive voice of the University of Toronto Mississauga. It handles all broad-based marketing initiatives on campus including branding, visual identity standards and advertising. Working collaboratively and strategically with academic and administrative units across the campus as well as with our community partners and media, we enhance understanding and support of U of T Mississauga nationally and internationally.

      The Communications team seeks a Managing Editor who understands the power of effective storytelling, and can use that skill to create high-quality, timely digital and print materials that support the campus’s strategic communications objectives. Reporting to the Director, Marketing and Communications, this individual will write and edit for the UTM home page, act as campus editor for University of Toronto Magazine, createinternal newsletters, and coordinate production activities for other communications and marketing materials. Using critical thinking and professionalism, this individual will liaise with creative professionals and vendors, handle competing deadlines and build strong relationships with internal and external colleagues.

      Your responsibilities will include:

      • Developing production schedules, including milestones, critical path, deliverables and reporting projects
      • Overseeing production operations related to communication activities
      • Overseeing the production of promotional and marketing materials
      • Drafting and editing content for print and/or online communications channels
      • Producing promotional and outreach materials
      • Overseeing work of short-term contractors

      Essential Qualifications:

      • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications, English or a related field, or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience
      • Minimum five (5) years related experience in a strategic communications role, developing content plans, writing news and features and copyediting
      • Minimum three (3) years related experience managing marketing and communications projects
      • Superior writing, editing, copyediting and proofreading skills are essential requirements
      • Excellent research and reporting skills
      • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, content management systems and experience with new/emerging media and information technology
      • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload, work effectively under pressure, manage conflicting priorities and meet deadlines
      • Excellent and rapid writing skills and experience translating complex concepts across a broad range of topics into stories that appeal to a general audience
      • Demonstrated ability to uncover and develop stories and find creative ways to tell those stories in terms of style and platforms
      • Experience delivering high-quality content in a range of formats across platforms
      • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and shifting deadlines
      • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with a range of contributors to the website and magazine to help ensure a regular stream of excellent content


      Assets (Nonessential):

      • Knowledge of the University of Toronto or other university environments is highly desirable
      • Knowledge of digital asset management
      • Knowledge of Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop and InCopy

      Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
      USW Pay Band 15 -- $95,627. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $122,290. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
