Job Description

- Directs all operations and driving/operating of an assigned vessel in service to and from the Toronto Islands for the transportation of passengers and freight or in charter service in Toronto Harbour and the waters of Lake Ontario in the vicinity of the Toronto Islands.
- Assumes complete accountability for the vessel, ensuring the proper conduct and discipline of the crew and the safety of all passengers.
- Selects and evaluates the performance of assigned staff.
- Effectively trains and supervises the crew in the performance of their duties, including the safe operation, navigation and docking of the vessel.
- Directs staff in all boat / fire drills as prescribed by Transport Canada.
- Coordinates and controls security drills on-board assigned vessel, including exercises with other vessels.
- Assists in the preparation of vessel budget ad monitors expenditures.
- Directs the general maintenance of the assigned vessel, ensuring that approved standards are maintained, as required.
- Implements the work of all assigned staff in an efficient manner and effectively handles day to day labour relations matters.
- Provides operational support to major/special events.
- Must be certified as a Master limited for vessels exceeding 60 tons (please attach a copy of your ticket to your application).
- Must possess a Radio Operator's Certificate in the Restricted Radiotelephone Operator category. (Please attach a copy of your certificate(s) to your application).
- Extensive experience driving small vessels as a Ship's Captain or First Officer.
- Extensive experience in driving all City operated ferry vessels or equivalent small vessel.
- Considerable experience working with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word).
- Must possess and be willing to maintain a valid personal Medical Certificate and Marine First Aid Certificate.
- Sound administrative skills, with the ability to effectively train and supervise the crew of a vessel.
- Good judgement in public and labour relations.
- Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, applicable Collective Agreements and related Labour Legislation, Marine Occupational Health and Safety (MOSH), Marine Transportation Security Act.
- Familiar with the administration and organization structure for security of marine vessels, security procedures of marine vessels and port, including the meaning and the requirements of the different MARSEC levels.
- Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime as required.
