JOB TITLE: Material Handler II
TITLE CODE: J4110 GRADE: 04/AFSCME
DEFINITION: Under general supervision, receives, stores, picks-up, and delivers supplies, materials, mail, documents, and equipment. Drives step vans, light trucks, automobiles, and other vehicles. Participates in office and school relocations. Performs other duties as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Operates and maintains an assigned area within a storage facility. Organizes, maintains, and rotates stock. Assists in conducting physical inventories of stock. Keeps shelves and goods clean and orderly.
Receives delivered items. Unloads vans, trucks, and trailers. Ensures the accurate receipt of items. Compares delivered items with invoices. Notes damages to goods received. Places stocked items in their proper storage locations. Operates material handling equipment such as forklifts and electric pallet movers.
Processes requisitions. Pulls, organizes, and prepares requisitioned items for delivery. Loads items onto vans, trucks, and trailers. Delivers and picks-up supplies, materials, inter-office mail, food, and equipment throughout the BCPS system. Obtains proper signatures for deliveries.
Operates commercial weight trucks. Operates step vans, light trucks, automobiles, and other vehicles. Delivers and picks-up items on an assigned route. Inspects equipment returned from loan.
Participates in office and school relocations. Moves furniture and equipment. Provides assistance to drivers and acts as a substitute driver as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training and Experience:
Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent, plus one year of warehousing, distribution, or related experience. (Additional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.)
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the principles and practices of material handling and delivery. Knowledge of warehouse and storage facility operations. Knowledge of material handling equipment including forklifts and electric pallet movers.
Skill in maintaining an inventory of items. Skill in receiving, storing, and delivering items. Skill in operating material handling equipment. Skill in operating step vans, light trucks, and automobiles.
Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to keep records of deliveries and the receipt of items.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
The work of this class entails the performance of heavy physical labor including frequent walking and standing, working at heights, lifting and carrying of objects of moderate to heavy weight (up to 60 pounds), and the use of coordinative and manipulative skills in the operation of material handling equipment. Duties require exposure to a warehouse and shop environments that include exposure to dust, dirt, chemicals, machinery, and equipment. Duties require the operation of automobiles, step vans, and light trucks and travel throughout Baltimore County.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Persons appointed to this classification are designated as Essential-As-Needed Personnel and are required to work when schools and/or offices are closed during adverse weather conditions or any other emergency when contacted and directed to do so.

This class specification defines the types of duties and level of difficulty of work required of positions in this title. It shall not be held to exclude duties not mentioned nor limit the right of management to assign work to employees.

GRADE: Grade 04 on the AFSCME Pay Scale, $17.22 - $24.48 per hour
